As I tried to still my racing heart and gather my breath, I held him close. Afraid he would disappear again, I needed to feel his heated skin against mine.

“How did you do that?” I finally asked.

“Talent,” he said with a deep chuckle.

I bumped him with my leg, because he knew that wasn’t what I was referring to, though he wasn’t lying. The movement caused his cock to partially slip out, and I whimpered in disappointment. He thrust his hips forward, pushing it back in, and I sighed in contentment.

“Madame Laveaux thinks it’s because I died after the accident on the way to the hospital but they brought me back. Kip says I was supposed to die. They both think my soul refused to leave my body because it didn’t want to leave you.” His lips pressed a kiss to my shoulder, sending chills across my body.

“Wait a minute. Kip? As in Kip Harper? But he—”

“Died?” he added when I paused.

“Yeah,” I whispered.

He took a deep breath before letting it out in a rush, then he pulled his head back to look at me as he spoke. “He won’t leave me. He feels guilty for how my life turned out, and he kind of stuck around.”

My eyes went wide before they darted around the room nervously.

He chuckled and shook his head. “He’s not here right now.”

“Oh, thank God,” I said in a relieved exhale. The thought of having an audience was unsettling. The thought of it being a ghostly audience was beyond bizarre.

“And Madame Laveaux?” I asked, trying to keep the jealousy out of my voice as I wondered who she was to him.

Obviously, I didn’t do so well, because he grinned knowingly. “She’s Voodoo’s grandmother. He’s one of my brothers in the club. Let’s just say she has a bit of a gift. So does Voodoo, but that’s another story.”

“So you’re telling me you’re dead?” I swallowed hard at the thought.

“No, not exactly,” he hedged.

“What does that even mean?” I asked in exasperation. This was beginning to be too much, and I really thought I might be losing my freaking mind.

“We don’t really know,” he said with a wince.

I shivered, and chills stole across me again.
