When he dropped onto the bed beside me, we were both breathing hard. For a moment, we lay there in stunned silence. Then he rolled my way and sucked my overly sensitive nipple, causing me to gasp.

“That was amazing.”

“Oh, we’re not done yet,” he warned. “I’m just recharging.”

His phrasing had me laughing, which caused his hot release to run out of me. I froze at the realization.

“We d-didn’t use a condom,” I stammered, eyes bulging.

“It’s okay, I can’t get STDs,” he mumbled around his mouthful of boob.

I slapped him repeatedly until he released it with a pop.

“What?”

“What the hell do you mean, you can’t get STDs? And what about me getting pregnant?” I practically shrieked.

He dropped his head to my chest. “Do you really want to do this now?”

“Yes. Yes, I absolutely do!”

He sighed.

“Where do you want me to start? With why I can’t get STDs or with how we know each other? Actually, they kind of tie together, I suppose.”

“Then how about you start from the beginning. Who am I? How do you know me?”

“You better brace yourself,” he muttered into my chest before he lifted his head. His silvery eyes were almost a dark gunmetal color as he stared into mine.

“Okay.”

“Your name is Soleil Castile.”

“Wait, you know my name, but they couldn’t find a trace of me before my abduction?”

He pressed his lips flat, then sat up. Completely comfortable in his nudity, he ran a hand through his hair in obvious frustration. I grabbed the blanket edge and folded it over my body. Anxious to hear what he had to say, I tried to ignore the display of his sculpted body when he didn’t do the same.

“That’s because you were born in southwest France at the end of the first phase of the Hundred Years’ War.”

Stunned, I laid on my back, stoically blinking at him. Then I started laughing my ass off. He continued to stare at me, not once cracking a smile. Finally, my humor died off, and I wiped the tears from my cheeks.

“You had me for a second. But really, that’s cruel. You know I have no idea who I am, and you make up stories like that, getting my hopes up and then crushing them.”

“Soleil, I’m serious,” he insisted.

I’m not sure if it was the look on his face or the seriousness in his tone, but for some insane reason, I started to believe him. “You can’t be.”

“I am.”

“That makes no sense whatsoever, Sabre,” I argued.

“And yet, it’s the truth. The problem is, there’s more, but after the way you reacted to that part, I’m reluctant to tell you.”

“Then explain how we’re here. No one lives forever, and we’re certainly not vampires.” The conversation was making my head spin. “Okay, tell me a story. Tell me what you believe happened,” I airily instructed with a wave of my hand.

“Here goes nothing,” he muttered. Then he looked me dead in the eyes and blew me away. “I was a eudaemon and your brother’s guardian—angel, if that’s what you want to call it. I’ve been in love with you, possibly to the point of obsession, since the first day I saw you. It didn’t matter to me that it was forbidden, and, at the time, I didn’t care about the consequences because I was foolish. You were all that mattered to me, and that was my downfall.”

The agony on his face made my heart ache for him. Despite his crazy story, that was real.
