“You have a point,” Kira agreed.

“And I’m not even sure exactly what he is or was. He said we called what he was a guardian angel, but he was essentially a fucking god, or demigod, or—”

The door opened, and we all turned our attention to it. Sabre glanced around the room, taking in my company, then shook his head. “I should’ve known you’d all be in here.”

“We were just leaving!” Loralei jumped up from her seat. The others were right behind her.

“Where the hell did all these chairs come from?” he asked as I took in the bevy of office chairs cluttering up his room.

Each woman grabbed her own and either giggled or shrugged as they rolled them out the door. Loralei grinned and waved as she turned to pull the door shut. “If you need anything, let me know.” She took advantage of Sabre facing me to give me an exaggerated wink.

My face heated, and I couldn’t help the nervous giggle that escaped.

“How are you feeling?” He snagged the remaining chair and rolled it over to sit by me.

“As well as one can feel after being hit by a truck,” I answered as I cautiously rolled to my side and propped my head on my hand. It was crazy that all I really felt was stiffness after what I’d been through.

He rested his elbows on his thighs and his hands dangled between them. The expression on his face killed my good mood.

“Sabre? What’s wrong?”

He dropped his face into his hands, and I saw him swallow with difficulty. Finally, he let them fall again, and the pain in his gaze had anxiety creeping in as I waited for him to speak. Slowly, I watched his eyes harden into chips of ice.

“We got a message.”

“From?”

“From him.” He didn’t need to say who. I could guess. My heart hammered as I sat up, and chills skated across my skin, ending in a violent shudder.

“How did you get it, and what did it say?”

“He sent it via one of our prospects.”

By his expression, there was obviously a lot more to that story, but I had a feeling he wasn’t going to tell me. The whole “club business” thing.

“What did it say?” I repeated, though I didn’t know if I really wanted to know.

“He’s not going to stop until I’m the last one standing. He’s going after everything that means something to me.” He closed his eyes and gritted his teeth, then he opened them, and I was startled at how dark they were. “He said he’s going to keep taking you from me just because he can.”

Fear ran cold through my veins, and I sat up. He rolled the chair to the edge of the bed, trapping my knees between his legs. “I’m not going to let that happen,” he promised.

“Sabre, you can’t stop him. I saw him.” And what I’d seen was something I could barely process. I still wasn’t sure if it was simply my imagination from hitting my head. Over and over, I shook my head in denial until he gripped my face in his strong hands.

“Baby, listen to me. I finally got you back, and I have those men down there with their families who have becomemyfamily. I think it will be safer if I send you away. If he thinks I don’t want you anymore, I don’t think he’ll look for you.”

“No! Sabre, maybe I don’t remember the us before, but you’re all I have!” I cried. “My mind may not remember you, but my soul does. I don’t want to be away from you.”

I gripped his wrists as he threaded his fingers through my hair. He rested his forehead to mine. The way he softly drew the tip of his nose along mine was so sweet that I tilted my head to brush my lips over his.

“You were never supposed to be mine. I had no business taking you for my own,” he whispered, his voice hoarse with emotion.

“Yet you did. Surely, something so strong that it brought us back together after all this time can’t be wrong,” I argued as I tightened my hold on him.

He shook his head sadly. “That’s what I told myself, but that was just justifying my actions.”

“No. I’ve only been around you for a short period of time, but the way you make my heart sing every time you’re near? That’s no mistake. The way my soul yearns for you any time we’ve been apart? No way that’s not real, because Ifeelit. I feelyou,” I adamantly insisted.

He captured my lips with his and groaned when I slipped my tongue between them. What started as a soft sweep into his mouth quickly became a desperate, needy dance between our tongues. I nipped his lower lip, and he caught my upper one.
