“Old and sore, but it works. How was your day?”

“We’ve just about got the album in the can. A few small details, and then we can go live. Right on schedule.”

“That’s great. Hey, I got a question for ya.”

“Okay.”

“I don’t want you to get mad.”

She laughed. “That’s not how you start if you don’t want me mad, Eight. What is it?”

He was nervous. What a pussy he’d become. Completely whipped. But he fucking loved it. “There’s a club down the road, and the guys want to hit it tonight.”

“A club. You mean a strip club.”

“Yes, ma’am. What are your feelings about naked titties and body glitter?”

“They don’t do much for me personally, but I’m not surprised they do for you.”

That didn’t sound like anger. It didn’t even sound like a no. “I appreciate feminine beauty, yeah.”

Again, she laughed. “I know you do.”

“And, you know, clubs like this one are look-don’t-touch. Hands to myself.”

“Uh-huh.”

“So … you’re okay if I go? I won’t come home to my house on fire or something like that?”

“Baby, you fuck around on me, and it’s not yourhousethat’ll burn.”

Now Eight laughed—but also realized that there was a kernel of truth inside that exaggeration. The twisted thing was how much it turned him on.

“I know. But that’s not why I won’t fuck around. I love you is why I won’t.” She hummed contentment into the phone, so he took a chance and added, “Does a lap dance count as fucking around, though?”

“You moved fast from looking but not touching to lap dances, mister.”

“I’m still not touching. I’m just sitting there.”

“Uh-huh.” She was quiet for a moment. Eight let her be. Then she said, “Hands to yourself. Fly sealed shut. You get hot with a stranger grinding on you, you get your ass back to the hotel and call me. Bring me that energy and we’ll jack off together.”

His woman was fuckingperfect.

“Holy shit, I love you, Marce.”

A low chuckle caressed his ear. “I love you, too.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Dash backed off the mic, fading out the harmony, Marcella clutched it in both hands, belting out the last stanza and a final round of the chorus of ‘Maybe Next Time,’ the last song on their new album.

It’s been too damn long

Since a night in your arms

And that’s why I say

Each day’s a new day
