“I know. I just—I don’t want to screw up, you know?”

“Everybody misses things, everybody makes mistakes. The key is mitigating them and learning from them. She’s going to be fine.”

“Because you saved my ass.”

“No, Kevin. I didn’t do it to keep you out of trouble.”

“I know. I didn’t mean—I don’t know what I meant. I know you did it for her.” He reached a finger between the bars and stroked the cat’s nose. “But thanks anyway. You’re amazing, Kelsey.”

Blushing, she smiled. “I’m not. But thank you.”

Then he turned to her with a look in his eye that made the muscles across her shoulders go taut.

“I know you have a boyfriend,” he said, and her tension ratcheted up a bit more. “And I’m not making a move … but, you know. If someday you don’t have a boyfriend, and you might be interested in going out for dinner sometime, I’d be glad of that.”

She relaxed a little—not all the way, but enough. Kevin really did seem like a decent guy who liked her, and that was okay.

And if her read on him was wrong, if he was a Brozilla after all? She had an army at her back, on call. So she smiled. “Are you hoping I’ll get dumped, Kevin?”

He smiled back. “Um … kinda? I guess that’s not very polite.”

She laughed. “No, it’s not. But it’s also kind of flattering, so I’ll let you off the hook.”

His laugh was genuine and warm. “Thank you. It’s pretty cool to have you as a friend.”

Kelsey was naturally easy with touch, and her instinct now was to kiss Kevin’s cheek, but she decided that doing so might blur lines that needed to stay clear. Instead, she patted his arm. “I think it’s pretty cool to have you as a friend, too.”
