He changed Petra’s hold of his hand, took it over, and led her to the front edge of the dance floor. And then, in front of all her friends, and his best friends, Petra and Jake led the party in the hustle.

He threw her out and reeled her back. When she spun up to his chest, he was grinning. “This is how much I love you,” he said at her ear.

“I know!” she said and kissed his cheek.

EPILOGUE

If a vehicle is traveling40 mph and vibration occurs in the steering wheel, which of these would be the least likely cause?

Jay took a deep breath and started reading the possible answers. A wasImproper wheel balance. That was a very likely cause of steering wheel vibration, so he ticked that one and moved to the next question.

Wait. Hold on.Read the question again. Read all the answers. Check your fucking work, stupid. He’d been practicing test-taking the past few months more than he’d been studying the content. Content, he knew. It was the fucking test itself that hung him up. Had always hung him up, since elementary school.

He read the question again—and this time the last four words popped out at him:the least likely cause.LEAST likely.

What an asshole he was. This was the kind of shit that had him taking half this fucking exam over again.

He read all four answers. B and D were also possible causes of vibration. But C—work arm control bushings—had nothing to fucking do with it.

He changed his answer to C and moved on to the next question.

Jay was pushing hisway through the front door of the testing center when his phone pinged. He pulled it from his coat pocket and saw an email preview on the lock screen: ASE TESTING RESULTS, the subject line read. This time, he wasn’t surprised at the quick results.

But he was twice as scared to open the email.

He shoved his phone back in his pocket and pushed into the dreary, blustery cold of an Oklahoma December. He pulled his hood up and trudged to his truck through the slushy, grimy remnants of the season’s first snow.

Once inside, with the heater blowing, he got his phone out and stared at the screen. There were also texts from Petra, his mom, Zach, and Duncan, all checking in, wanting to know how it went.

He opened Petra’s:I love you. Just wanted that right up front in your head. No particular reason.Followed by a red heart and kissing lips. Jay grinned and opened the email.
