“Ah, so that would mean you are poor now.”

“Well, with the price of gas nowadays…” He holds up the gas can. “I can fill you up.”

I snort because of the double entendre, and he winks at me, his expression sly and shrewd. I just shake my head, unwilling to give him any credit.

It doesn’t take him long at all to fill the gas tank. “Are you going to get your gas gauge fixed?” he asks.

“Probably not,” I answer honestly.

With my mom being in Europe, there’s not a lot of money to go around. In fact…

“Do you happen to know if there are any job openings on campus?” I ask.

“You want a job?”

“Yes, Einstein. Why else would I be asking?”

“I thought you would rather worry about your studies.”

I narrow my eyes. “What makes you think that?”

“You haven’t gone to a lot of parties.”

“I’ve gone to some,” I protest, and that’s the truth. Robyn’s invited me to some, and I usually go with her. I have made other friends, but their freshmen, and for the most part, they seem a bit too skittish about drinking underage. As for me, I don’t mind having a drink or two, but I got plastered once, at the first party Robyn took me, too, and I can’t quite remember everything that happened, and when I woke up, I ended up getting sick. I hated the hangover, so I haven’t drunk to get drunk since.

“You haven’t come to one of mine.”

“I wasn’t aware that you had parties.”

“Without a doubt.”

“You also haven’t invited me to any.”

“I’m not sure if you would come.”

“If your friends are gonna be there…” I grimace, my mood turning sour.

“I don’t kick them out of our house. It is our house, after all.”

“I never said that you should, but maybe on a night when there’s another party that they want to go to…”

“I know how to throw a party. Trust me. They would rather come to mine than go anywhere else.”

“You’re so full of yourself.”

“It’s called confidence.”

“More like arrogance.”

“A little bit of arrogance isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”

I roll my eyes. “Sure. Keep telling yourself that.”

“Arrogance and self-confidence go hand in hand.”

“I’m not so sure about that.”

“It’s not always a bad thing to have a chip on your shoulder.”
