He looked up at her over the table, and she knew. Before she even spoke, she knew.

That he’d always had the power to devour her if he wanted.

To destroy her.

And that he would.

“I’m pregnant.”

His fury was immediate. Like a lit match. And when he moved, he was that Tiger. Instantaneous. Powerful. He was across and standing in front of her in no time at all.

“You’re what?”

“I’m pregnant.”

“No. That cannot be.”

“It’s true. You didn’t use a condom the first night we were together. How can you say that isn’t true? I think there’ve been many times since then when you haven’t.”

And the girl she had been back when they had first met would’ve been embarrassed to talk about this, but not the woman she had become. “How can you look at me and say that there isn’t a way?”

“Because it isn’t acceptable. I do not want a child.”

“Well, I am having one. So now it is simply a question of...”

“No. I want nothing to do with it.”

“You can’t mean that.”

“I do. You don’t know anything about me, and that is by design. I will never, never have a child.”

And before she could think about what she was doing, she stood and pushed away from the table.

“Riot...”

“Don’t talk to me,” she said. “Don’t touch me. How dare you.How dare you.”

“For all I know you’re pregnant with someone else’s bastard and you’re trying to fob it off as mine.”

“How dare you,” she whispered.

And then she turned and ran out of the room. Ran out of the house. The rain was pounding, but she ran anyway. But she slipped and fell onto the cobbled stones. And felt a violent cramp in her stomach.

She stood up, a sob on her lips. And she felt warmth on her legs.

“Riot,” he shouted.

“Go away,” she said, tears pouring down her face. “I’m losing it anyway. Everything is lost.”

He picked her up and carried her inside. He put her in the shower, then wrapped her in a towel and tucked her into bed.

He left her there.

The next morning he was gone.

But a car arrived for her.

Ready to whisk her into the heart of the village.
