It had been necessary, or rather it had felt so at the time.

But now...

Now here she was again. All of them together.

“Maybe,” she said. “I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the fact that I’m a mother. It’s difficult for me to see where you fit in.”

“Let me show you.”

And he had never wanted to be gentle with someone in all of his life, but he wanted to be gentle with her. Right now, he wanted to learn to do things and be things that he had never once desired to be.

Right now, he wanted to be the man that he had needed to be when she had told him she was having a child. The man he had been unable to be. He had months to sit with that. To sit with the loss of the pregnancy. And then the miracle of finding out she hadn’t lost the child after all. Then the uncertainty of her own health.

And then she had woken up remembering nothing. It gave him a chance to change it all.

The restaurant was open-air, right out on the street where they could easily be seen. And it was his favorite. Not because of that, but because of how amazing the food was.

Whenever they had shared a meal together, she had always enjoyed it. But he had spent that time willing her to finish, so that they could get down to what he truly wanted. Which was always stripping her out of whatever she was wearing and being inside of her again.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want it now. But there was something about the moment that he didn’t mind lingering in. Something about the moment itself that seemed like enough.

And it allowed him to truly watch her as she ate her food. As she delighted in it.

“I have never had anything so amazing.”

She had always enjoyed the food when he had taken her out, and it hadn’t occurred to him that she didn’t remember any of those meals.

“You have,” he said. “You just don’t recall. I fed you well during our time together.”

She laughed. “Well, there is something to be said for getting to discover this all over again. If I can have some humor about it.”

Their eyes caught and held, and desire arced between them. There was no denying it.

“Maybe there will be something to be said for discovering other things for the first time all over again.”

“Though, by your very admission, your first time with me was your... Your first time.”

“I didn’t tell you?” she asked.

“No. You didn’t. We never spoke of the past. Past lovers, I mean. You told me only small details about your life.”

“Well, the story of my past life is only sad.”

“I do not think you are sad.”

A small smile curved her lips. “That is something.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

“And what about you? Did we talk about... Your past?”

“I’m much more interested in my potential future. With you.”

She let out a satisfied sigh, and then a chocolate cake was put in front of her and she grinned brightly.

“I’m sorry that we didn’t attract any media attention,” she said.

“What are you talking about?” he said. “We’ve been having our picture taken this entire time.”
