And he didn’t know what that meant. Only that it was true. And it echoed inside of him long after the words were spoken.

But as time marched on, as their wedding drew nearer, that persistent feeling of grief wouldn’t go away.

And he remembered...

He remembered when she had not. When she had believed he loved her.

It had been easy in its own way. All he had to do was take her to nice places, speak to her with kindness. All that he had to do was pretend the past didn’t exist.

It had felt...

It had been a strange sort of freedom. The first time he’d felt detached from what his father had made him.

He didn’t see why they couldn’t do it now. He didn’t see why.

And what he wanted was to find his way back to that, he realized.

It stunned him. The realization that he wanted something. The realization that he missed...her. Of course, when she had gone the first time he had missed the sex. That had been what he told himself. But they’d only been together once. In all this time, only once.

And it was not simply that he missed.

He missed her, and he missed the child being around. She was around less when Riot wasn’t there. Of course. It made sense.

He had been filled with certainty. That nothing mattered but the wedding. Joining her to him. But he was beginning to realize it wasn’t enough.

To live in this space. Of darkness. Of utter coldness between them.

No.

And on the eve of the wedding, he made a decision. He was going to win her back. With her full memory, he would win her back.

He could not fix what was broken in himself. But she felt like the key to something.

When she’d loved him, he’d been in control of his darkness in a more profound way than ever. He wanted that back.

He would make it so.

She would love him again.

Of that he was certain.

CHAPTER TEN

SHEWASDOINGher best to be as happy as possible. But she had lost that feeling of being the luckiest girl in the world. It had been there for a while. And it had been so intoxicating. The feeling of having it all.

She had Soriya. She lived in a beautiful place.

She might be desperately lonely, but that was not really any different from the life she had before she had known Krav.

And at least she had a child.

That was an unexpected gift, and something she hadn’t thought she wanted.

To be a mother.

But there was healing taking place inside of her soul as she mothered her child.

As she was able to find space to heal over the ways her mother had not been there for her.
