Ilyas was next in line and the future king.

And he thought she had made a sex tape with his brother?

And what did Suzanne have to do with it all?

She thought of the many times that Suzanne had borrowed her phone, and in the mirror she could see the terror in her eyes as she started to put it all together. She fought to stay calm.

Maggie pulled out her phone but she couldn’t get it to turn on, let alone find a signal.

Like her, it was covered in sand.

She was in trouble, Maggie knew.

Serious trouble.

Now she was actually glad of the chance for some space, though certainly she was in no mood to make herself presentable.

But she did need time to think.

Her eyes stung from being sandblasted and her mouth was terribly dry but she ignored the jug and goblet by the bed.

Maggie was certain now that her drink earlier had been spiked and there was no way she would risk it again.

Instead she headed back into the bathing area and, more to calm herself than anything, she finally undressed, got into the bath and tried to work out what on earth to do.

Speak to him.

First she must calm down, and then rationally explain what must have happened, or rather what hadn’t.

It took for ever to get the sand out of her hair and she could see the merit of the maidens helping as alone she attempted to pour a heavy jug of water to rinse off.

She was terribly thirsty but had been warned about the water so many times that she chose not to risk the bathwater. Instead, she wrapped herself in a large towel, headed into the sleeping area, and pulled on the slip. She could hear her teeth chattering, though not from the cold desert night, for it was warm in the tent. She climbed into bed and felt her body sink in. She lay there in silence and stared at the billowing ceiling. Her eyes were heavy and scratchy from lack of sleep.

They would notice she was gone in the morning and come looking for her, Maggie attempted to reassure herself.

But she had been told that they did not venture further into the desert without the permission of the king.

And she was stuck with his elder son.

Would anyone even notice her missing?

Probably not.

And, even if they did, surely they would be looking for Suzanne?

The panic she had felt since being grabbed was suddenly replaced by a feeling of loneliness.

Would anyone actually miss her?

Maybe Paul would just assume she wasn’t coming back after all. Would he really check with the authorities if she didn’t show up for work next week?

There was Flo, her good friend. But Flo was busy with work and her family, as well as her disastrous love life. They weren’t in constant touch. Perhaps if she heard nothing, Flo would simply assume that Maggie had extended her holiday.

It might be weeks, Maggie realised, until anyone actually noticed she was gone.

She told herself she was being ridiculous, but it was a silent fear that plagued her at times.

That she could disappear unnoticed.
