CHAPTER SIX

MAGGIETRIEDTOdeny the pull to go out there.

She had never come close to this level of want before.

In truth, she never allowed herself to get close to anyone for fear of being taken in by promises and lies.

Ilyas didn’t lie.

Far from it—he made absolutely no apology for his desire.

And that was all it was, Maggie knew.

Sexual desire.

She wondered what he would think if he knew that just the touch of him through a robe was further than she had ever gone before.

She lay there and the music grew louder, filling the sleeping area and seemingly plucking at her taut nerves, and she knew that she would never again know a lover like him.

There was something raw and carnal about him that had her stomach pulling tight, even at first sight.

She could not take a full breath when thinking about him, let alone when he was present.

He made her aware of her own body, and whenever he was near, Maggie felt herself flare to the imperceptible attention he gave it.

Imperceptible, for his eyes did not drift over her and there was nothing that made her feel uncomfortable as there had been on the yacht.

Quite simply, he turned her on in a way no one ever had.

And that had started long before their kiss.

The music throbbed and her desire was deep, but as she climbed out of the bed and caught sight of her reflection in the mirror, Maggie knew she could no more walk in there and simply take up where they had left off than she could fly to the moon.

Oh, she was naïve in body but not in mind, and she knew there could never be more than their time here in the desert. But, while she accepted he was a ruler, it did not mean she could not make her own demands.

And she would tell him so.

She stood barefoot at the entrance to the main area, where he lay on his side, with fruits laid out on the carpeted floor. She told him what she had decided.

‘I shan’t sleep with someone I don’t know.’

‘Then we shan’t be together,’ Ilyas said.

‘So no one can get to know you?’

‘Of course not.’

‘Because you’re too important?’ she mocked.

‘No, but my secrets are.’

She looked at him, and after a moment his haughty face softened a touch and he gestured for her to join him. She hesitated.

‘It’s okay,’ Ilyas said. ‘We don’t have to do anything, neither shall we speak of sex or Suzanne...’

He was the most direct person she had ever met and yet he had her spinning.

Wanting.
