‘Ilyas!’ he called out to his son again, clearly expecting him to follow him in, but Ilyas refused to be rushed and continued to speak with Maggie.

‘Have you got everything?’ Ilyas checked.

She went into her purse and pulled out her itinerary and passport. ‘All here.’

Maggie looked at the itinerary, with all her flights ticked off bar one. How well she remembered the day she had printed it off, knowing full well that discovery awaited, while never really expecting to fall in love.

But she had. Deeply.

‘Have a safe flight,’ Ilyas said.

There was no promise to see each other again.

He didn’t even lie and say they might keep in touch.

It really was goodbye and both knew that it really had to be.

‘Oh, here,’ Ilyas said, and reached into his deep pockets, then handed her her phone. ‘There isn’t much charge. They only just got it running.’

‘I’m sure you’ve been through it.’

‘No.’

She looked up then. ‘Why not?’

‘Because I know you would hate it if I did.’

‘Thank you,’ she said, and then smiled. ‘I shall be going through it, though. I want to know what Suzanne said...’ She turned it on and tried to make light of the situation. In fact, Maggie did all she could to pretend this was just another goodbye amongst the many.

‘There’s nothing,’ Maggie said as she scrolled through her phone.

‘She would have deleted as she went along.’

But then all thoughts of Suzanne were gone as her phone started to go crazy as message after message pinged in.

‘It’s Paul,’ she said, ‘he’s worried that I haven’t responded to his emails.’ She read on. ‘He’s offered me a promotion if I come back!’

And then she laughed but choked in the midst of it as she read on. ‘Flo’s been trying to get hold of me. She’s threatening to contact Interpol if I don’t get in touch soon.’

It was so wonderful to know that she had friends who cared deeply.

Who had noticed she was gone.

‘It would seem I was missed after all.’

‘Of course you were.’

He had never doubted that she would be, Maggie thought, not for a second. That night when she had felt so lonely, he had told her how important she surely was to the people in her life.

And he showed her that now.

To hell with protocol, and even with his father, for he took her in his arms.

‘You shall be missed by me.’

Then don’t let me go, she wanted to beg.Offer me more than time as your whore, she wanted to plead, but she was saved from begging by his mouth.

His kiss was pure Ilyas.
