EPILOGUE
‘WOW...’SAIDROULA.
They sat on the steps of thetheatron, gazing down on the world.
They were on their way back from Athens and had just visited her mother, for a little meet-and-greet. It had been emotional, but had gone surprisingly well. Then, as they’d been driving up to their Anapliró home, Roula had suggested they stop.
Galen had put a few flowers from a pink bouquet into his parents’kandylakia. The candle was still lit.
‘Yes, wow,’ Galen said.
Only Galen was wowed by little blue eyes and a very red face, all of a week old.
Roula would not be snapping back quite as quickly as Kristina, but she’d been able to take a gentle walk with their very precious wrapped bundle, and now they sat on the steps of what was the best place on earth to share their happy news.
Leo and Deacon, and Costa and Mary—with little Costa, of course—had dropped everything to visit them at the hospital. Kristina had been in too. As well as Dora and Hector! But there were plenty more they were ready to reveal the details to.
‘I have a phone signal,’ Roula declared.
‘Tell them,’ Galen said, not taking his eyes off his daughter.
It was quite a group message—especially for two people who had no real family.
Yolanda and Stephanie, and then there was Joe and Nico, and the guys on the ground floor... And really, for someone as supposedly socially backward as Galen, there was a very long list of essential people all waiting for their first glimpse of Constantina Pallas.
It took for ever to send the message—forever—and they sat gazing down at their daughter. A little late, a little bit of a worry, a whole lot to love.
‘A whole person...’ Galen just stared at her. ‘Condensed!’
‘I know!’ Roula agreed. ‘I mean, she’s everything—an entire person. Yet this tiny little fragile creature at the same time.’
She got him.
‘Home?’ Galen said.
Up to their Anapliró home, to get to know their little girl. For he got her too, and home, with their little family, was where her heart was right now.
Galen knew Roula.
