Just a matter of tying up all the loose ends.

‘Roula!’ It was Dora at her door. ‘Kristina’s here.’

And for all Kristina’s coldness there was so much kindness. For there was genius Luka, wearing the blue booties Dora had knitted and with a blue teddy given to him by someone else, everything blue, blue, blue...

‘You look amazing,’ Kristina said to Roula. ‘I hear it’s all gone very well.’

‘Thank you.’

‘No, thankyoufor agreeing to go to the ball. I thought I’d be able to go but, as I was just telling Galen, I can’t be way from my breast pump for more than two hours. He said not to worry.’

It was funny to see the guys all blushing, and Kristina actually gave Dora a little wink as a few of them scuttled off.

‘Wait!’ Dora called them back. ‘Kristina’s here for another reason. Surprise!’ she said to Roula.

‘Youget cake?’ Kristina said.

And champagne, and cola, and even Galen made a brief appearance.

‘Will you miss us?’ Dora asked.

‘Yes.’ Roula smiled.

‘We’ve still got the ball,’ Nico reminded her, and Roula could feel Galen’s eyes on her as she flushed.

They all ate cake, and then Galen asked if he could have a word with her before she left.

‘Could you close the door?’ he asked.

‘Why?’

‘It’s all right. I’m not going to dim the lights...’

Roula blushed.

‘I want to talk to you in case I don’t see you again. What I have to say has nothing to do with us.’

Roula closed the door.

‘Sit down.’

She did.

‘I might not be able to say the right thing, but Dora’s a good friend to have—so stop shutting her out.’

‘Pardon?’

‘That’s it,’ Galen said. ‘All I have to say on the matter. Thank you for everything you’ve done—and I do mean that. You’ve cheered the place up...well, for the most part. And, on a more personal note, you’ve been a great help to me and my grandmother. It’s appreciated.’

‘Thank you,’ Roula said, and stood. ‘I’ve really enjoyed my time.’

‘Go.’

Oh, but she didn’t want to.

Not just because of the Galen thing, but all of it.

But that was what they did here—a little wave... ‘See you...’ Only Roula couldn’t do that.
