‘Youare my nice memories of here,’ he said, and Alicia knew this was the closest to romance not just she butanyonewould ever get from him.

It wasn’t love he gave, but neither was it lust. It was the most precious moment of her life.

‘I’ll treasure this kiss,’ she told him.

‘And me.’

It was a kiss that would not be halted, yet so delicious and patient. The water slowing Dante just enough to relish rather than unload. His hands glided over her waist, his fingers spanning her ribs. All Alicia had to do was hold his head, or rest her arms on his shoulders, and be so deeply kissed.

His hand came to her breast but, aware of the wretched padding, she removed it and guided it back to her waist. Her consent made itself known elsewhere, for beneath the water her legs coiled tightly around him and they kissed harder, deeper, as the hunger that seemed to have existed since she was born was satisfied.

‘Oh, Dante...’ She was in bliss, and somehow knew what to do next.

Latched together, they moved up the bank so that he could stand but now with both his hands free. He held her hips beneath the water, and on the surface they kissed in ways that were gentle, tender and subtle, denying the power beneath.

The wind stung but his mouth did not. Her arms were locked behind his neck and they were looking right at each other and his erection was wedged between them.

‘We’re just kissing,’ she said, as he moved her slowly up and down the length of his shaft.

Dante didn’t answer. They were position-perfect and his heat was on her.

‘Dante...’ Alicia gasped, just a bit bemused—because how could she not have known that such bliss existed? His hand left her waist and she welcomed the shared indulgence as he held himself and pressedthere, right into her knickers. ‘We could...’ she breathed, almost weightless and yet still pressing down. ‘Just a little way.’

They were looking right at each other, and his eyes were as blue as a summer night as he denied her.

‘No.’

He moved her back against his length, then he kissed her shoulder and her neck and she started to tremble—to climb up him, almost. Except he was gripping her hips, holding her tight.

She started to moan, for it was as if the tide had suddenly turned, as if they were being dragged down, and yet she was being held so very safe and still, as a power she did not know was unleashed.

It must be the same for Dante, too, because his sudden shout was hollow, the sound of a secret shared, and she smothered it with her mouth. They came with lips locked and clung to each other, sharing each other’s breath as the frantic moment passed, his hands becoming looser on her hips and her legs relaxing.

Their bodies were sticky from the heat above the surface but sated beneath...almost.

He looked at down at her spiky eyelashes and swollen mouth and wild wet hair, which he lifted. ‘I’ve marked you,’ he said. ‘Wear it down...’

She nodded, and rested her head on his shoulder, her legs still loose on his hips, looking at the swirling silty river, glad the water was not clear today.

‘I meant what I said,’ Alicia admitted. ‘I want to feel you in me.’

‘I’m ignoring that,’ Dante told her.

‘Please don’t ignore me.’ She kissed his shoulder with deep care, just kissed that one salty spot and tasted his skin, wondering how what had felt like too much just moments ago felt like not enough now. ‘I want it to be you, Dante.’

‘Alicia, you know you’ll regret it.’

‘No.’

‘You’re old-fashioned, and you want an old-fashioned family, and you’ll never get that from me.’

‘I know that.’

‘Go and be with Guido!’

‘Guido?’

‘Don’t play games, Alicia. Why do you think he was at my mother’s funeral? Certainly it wasn’t for a glimpse ofme.’
