‘Assuming...?’

‘Like father, like son,’ Dante said.

‘I don’t understand.’

‘As I said—a romance of sorts. My father attended my mother’s funeral from a distance. And perhaps stopped by the house.’

‘Oh, God.’ Alicia felt her eyes grow wide. ‘There was a car...’

‘I have another half-brother.’ He gave her a very triumphant smile. ‘I accept your apology.’

She was too Sicilian to give it meekly. ‘What was Isupposedto think, Dante?’

Old hurts rose like hot lava, but they were beaten by tears.

‘Not here,’ he said.

‘He doesn’t even look like you.’ She looked across the dance floor to his father, who gave them a rather cheery wave.

‘Sometimes you can see it. We have the same feet...’

‘Oh, no...’

‘Do you want tell Giustina, or shall I...?’

She was starting to cry.

‘Stop it.’ He pulled her into him. ‘It’s fine. I’m not saying anything. I think, though, it is time we said goodnight.’

They tripped home, holding hands.

‘I was so jealous.’

‘The baby was the image of me, apparently.’

‘Are you angry?’ she asked.

‘Not with you,’ he said.

‘You are.’

‘I’ll get over it.’

‘Can we go the long way?’

‘In those heels?’

She tried, but she ended up with her shoes off and riding on his back, as if she was on a donkey.

This was the best of them, Alicia knew, and she would remember these moments from a distance, with fondness. She was not going to get upset tonight, because it had been such a hard day, and it was such a lovely almost full moon night.

‘It’s the best view,’ she said.

‘I don’t know... I like the cliffs in Trebordi,’ he said.

‘Three cliffs,’ Alicia said. ‘Not now, but...’

She had two—Roberto was safe, Dante would be fine, and Beatrice...
