‘You were my first, and I promise you this—you will be my last.’

He kindly omitted the wild in-between years as he lowered her to the bed.

She looked up at him and told him a truth of her own. ‘You are my always.’

EPILOGUE

ALICIAHADFALLENin love with Dante as he’d walked down this very aisle.

Not towardsher, though.

This time things were very different.

She stood in the vestibule with Reverend Mother by her side and a priest who was willing to break a little with tradition.

Cars lined the street, for Alicia and Dante were back and all were curious.

Alicia didn’t notice them, though.

She stood in a very simple dress in the palest green and held a bunch ofpomelia, or frangipini as they were known in other parts of the world. Here, though, the white and lemon fragrant blooms were the flowers of Sicily.

‘Are you nervous?’ Reverend Mother asked.

‘No,’ Alicia said, even though thepomeliashook as if she was. She was reminded of the time she had stood at the door to his suite. ‘I am impatient, I think...’

That was the better word.

Impatient to see him and to be with him.

Now Alicia stepped out of the vestibule and into the light of the church, which was bright and clear through the windows.

Dante stood beside Gino. He trusted him.

His family were there too, smiling as she approached.

There was just one person missing...

The congregation was minus that one blonde head she felt she would search for for ever.

But today she at least was home.

Now she walked towards her future husband.

Her hair was up and she wore the gold hoops in her ears. Not just because they were from her parents, but because Dante had carried one half of the pair all these years.

‘You look so beautiful,’ he said when she reached his side.

‘So do you.’

He wore a suit so immaculate, but it was the scent of him that she breathed in.

‘Are you nervous?’ she asked.

‘No.’ He smiled, then leant closer. ‘Though I think my father is at being here...’

He made her laugh.

And, while it was a very traditional wedding, for a rather untraditional man, he knew certain things. Just before she handed her bouquet to Reverend Mother Dante stroked a waxy petal.
