And he would find out.

In three weeks’ time Beatrice Taylor would leave the palace.

Perhaps one discreet liaison with his liaison aide before he joined the monogamy club...?

‘Sir?’ Jordan’s nervous swallow alerted him and he looked up. ‘Is this latest revelation perhaps...’

‘Because I haven’t signed the Document of Intent?’ He said it for her. ‘I would think so.’

The publication of those photos was no accident; the pressure was all from within.

‘Sir, do you remember I suggested offering Beatrice a full-time role here?’

‘Beatrice isn’t going to stop them.’ He shook his head. ‘No.’

Hell, no.

She was the damned reason he hadn’t signed it. He would like to get to back to business—certainly not offer her a permanent role. On the permanent staff? Always there? Always by his side?

Yikes. God, no.

‘Julius.’ Jordan actually snapped his name. ‘If Beatrice was permanent then she’d have clearance, and at least she’d know what you’re up against.’

‘And what would that change?’

‘Please...just listen.’

And because it was Jordan’s responsibility to deal with such matters, he had no choice but to listen as she pointed out how much more smoothly things had been going since Beatrice’s arrival. That it had been Beatrice who had sat through many, many meetings arguing his case, without him there.

She added, ‘Even though I’m a little loath to admit it.’

‘Loath?’ Julius checked. ‘You were the one who pushed for her selection.’

‘I did.’ Jordan nodded. ‘And she’s great at her job.’

‘But...?’

‘I do have my reservations... Take this morning.’

‘Yep.’

He got up from his seat and looked down at the lake, listening to Jordan’s brusque summing up of his icy, albeit efficient liaison aide.

‘And she’s not exactly a team player,’ Jordan said. ‘But that’s not your issue.’

It was, though.

Julius felt as if Beatricewason his team.

Beatrice Taylor was exceedingly good at her job.

Why the hellwouldn’the keep her on?

He knew why.

She was the coldest, most direct, private and prickly woman he’d ever met—but she could also be suddenly kind.

It hadn’t been long after her arrival at the palace that he had found that she fascinated him. He’d found himself leaning against the window, pondering a problem, and had noticed her tipping some crumbs into the lake and one of the gardeners dashing over to scold her.
