Actually, Beatrice was taken aback.

He was supposed to be safe.

Distant.

It wasn’t her reputation...it was her heart she was trying to guard. But he already had it. Beatrice knew that now.

‘Was he furious?’ Jordan asked as they walked back.

‘His horse was a bit startled.’

So too was she.

It was a long day, because after the excitement of the morning it was quiet.

All the news about the Prince was upbeat and positive, and it seemed the tide was turning in his favour. Actually, it had already turned—and she knew it. She rather thought the King might know it too. How could he not?

It was so quiet that it left her time to think—about the King crying by the lake, and the Queen pushing his hand away, and a family all grieving the death of a loved one.

And Julius.

Who offered her more than she’d dared even to hope for.

Fun. Adventure. Danger. Passion.

What would Alicia say?

A week on a desert island with the man of your dreams? No strings, just pure bliss?

Beatrice did not need to guess what she’d say.

Go. Have fun. Come on, Beatrice. Do it!

But then she’d fall even more deeply in love with him.

Yes, love.

Not a crush...nor a simple attraction.

She didn’t know quite how to define it, but Beatrice was scarily certain that this was love.

It always had been.

From the day he’d breezed in.

Just as he did later that afternoon.

‘Here,’ he said as he walked into her office. ‘All that sulking was for nothing.’

It was the gift he had mentioned. And he’d clearly not just sent Tobias out to grab something—unless Tobias was into gift-wrapping—because it was a small parcel, wrapped exquisitely in red and gold and tied with a beautiful gold silk cord.

‘I don’t sulk.’ She glanced up. ‘Well, perhaps a bit.’

She was almost scared to open it...almost wished he’d forgotten her rather than bought her something as lovely as this. And she hadn’t even opened it yet!

‘Beatrice, I know I have a poor track record, but even at my worst I usually do flowers, or Jordan does...’

‘I know. I was just...’ She shrugged. ‘Sulking.’ It sounded safer to admit that than say what was in her heart.
