‘I’m going up...’ Jordan pushed out another smile.

‘I might go and have something to eat.’ Beatrice replied.

‘Do,’ Jordan said. ‘Then I must take your computer and phone... Like I said...some last day!’

‘Yes.’

Some last day.

The lid of her new cup leaked. Beatrice found that out when she dripped coffee down herself as she sat by the lake. Then she felt a sudden frantic panic, because there were just six little cygnets today.

She cast her eyes around for the lazy one...

She couldn’t see him anywhere.

The worst ever last day.

‘Beatrice.’

He said her name and she closed her eyes rather than look at him. She was sitting with a very cold coffee and just a few hours left on the clock, but she was determined to see it through.

‘I thought we were ignoring each other.’

‘Well, I’m expected to wish you farewell.’

‘Farewell, sir.’

‘How’s the new cup?’

‘Disappointing,’ she said as he took a seat by her side. Then, ‘You couldn’t wait till I’d gone?’

‘I asked earlier in the week for more time. I thought I had it.’

‘Well, clearly you didn’t ask forcefully enough.’

But Julius was kind. She knew that. He wouldn’t put her through this if he had a choice.

‘Beatrice, I was conceived in case my brother died. I’m not complaining. I’m hardly a lamb being led to the slaughter.’

‘So you want this?’

‘It’s not about what I want. It’s about duty. It’s about what’s best for the country. I’m crazy about you, Beatrice, and you know it. Hell, my doctor even wants to take blood to see why I’m losing weight.’

She frowned.

‘I was fine with it all until a few weeks ago...almostfine,’ he amended. ‘And then they had to hire someone to fix my image. To fix me...’ He gave her a black smile. ‘Please listen. I can give you one week, and I will do everything in that week to make up for the years you’ve hidden yourself away.’

‘I haven’t hidden myself away.’

‘You know you have. Please, just think about it. Now you’re finished here...’

‘I’m not going away with a man who’s signed the Document of Intent—whatever the hell that even means.’ She stared ahead and spoke calmly, but her words were final. ‘Delay signing and then we’ll speak.’

‘That’s not an option.’

‘What could he possibly do to you?’

‘The“he”you refer to is the King?’
