And he knew, as he had told Beatrice so recently, that with privilege came responsibility. Only there was no blah-blah-blah to it...

He smiled.

His choice was already made.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

‘ANYNEWS?’ Beatrice asked when Jordan called her to come up.

‘No. Julius is off somewhere with Tobias. He’ll be back for the signing.’ Jordan was, as always, practical. ‘It’s just security stuff I want you for. I need your computer.’

‘Oh...’ Beatrice nodded. ‘Of course.’

‘And your phone, plus lanyard, ID...’

‘Sure.’

Beatrice took out all the items and stared at the phone for a very long moment.

She hated her parting shot to him.

Hated that she’d had to get in first...strike first.

For all her bravado, they had slept together once and never been on a date... He was hardly going to turn his back on duty or throw his sister under the bus for that.

Yet he had made her smile, had made her feel so happy and wanted. And as much as he’d been able to, he had offered her more than one night.

Could she fire off a quick text to him? What would she say? Sorry? Good luck? And what for?

Her phone would be checked—and anyway, in the grand scheme of a kingdom, what did feelings even matter?

‘Beatrice!’ Jordan called.

The team was gathering, and she hadn’t expected anyone to come. It was a very rushed leaving do, given the events of the day, and it touched her very much the effort Jordan had gone to.

‘Unfortunately Prince Julius can’t be here, or Tobias, or...’

It was quite a low turn-out, Beatrice saw, but there was some good news at least.

‘I was annoyed you were leaving,’ Jordan continued, ‘so you were only going to get a temp’s gift. But Julius—PrinceJulius,’ she corrected, ‘said I was being petty.’

Beatrice smiled and opened the velvet box. Clearly Jordan had chosen the gift, because it was a lovely gold bracelet.

Jordan helped her put it on her wrist. Beatrice knew there were no antihistamines in her bag, but she must have turned into a nicer person—because she didn’t tell them she was allergic to gold, just smiled and said thank you.

There were also two cards.

‘I might open these later,’ Beatrice said, but immediately gave in and started slicing them open.

She smiled at all the lovely messages, and there was Jordan’s private phone number.

‘Keep in touch,’ Jordan said.

‘I’d love to.’

Tobias had signed it too, and wished her well, and she found she was looking forward to hearing about his baby boy.

Wow, she was almost crying—not that Beatrice showed it.
