Page 112 of My Retribution Too

My head hurt like a son of a bitch. My body too. Hell, even my eyes hurt.

“Pick her up, let’s get out of here.”

Now that voice I would know if I was inside a room filled with screaming babies. Ayana.

How in the hell was that possible?

I felt someone lift me from the ground. Someone that wasn’t Lock. I started to squirm.

“Gotdammit, Phoebe, be still. I don’t want to drop you.”

Yeah, I recognized that voice too. Reed.

“Hey sweetheart, we got you. We got you. It’s going to be okay.” I felt Ayana rub my face gently, pushing back my hair. “Just relax. Let us get you out of here.”

I listened and stopped fighting. Next, I heard gunfire that seemed to be everywhere. It sounded like I was back in Afghanistan. I opened one eye but realized I couldn’t open the other.

“I wonder who’s all out there,” said Noelle. Shit Noelle was here too.

“Noelle?” I said low, my voice sounding scratchy, as if I hadn’t used it in decades.

A soft gentle glide of a small hand ran along my arm.

“Hey, beautiful.”

“What’s happening?” I asked straining my neck to look around me. “Reed, put me down.”

“That’s not a good idea, your knee is—”

“Put me down, please.” I insisted, raising my scratchy voice.

I felt him slowly release me. One foot touched solid ground then the next. Just as I went to put pressure on my right leg I damn near fell back to the ground. I cried out in agony. It was so bad I damn near passed out. Reed grabbed me and kept me from falling.

“Fuck!!!!” I cried out, eyes closed, fighting back tears.

“I told your stubborn ass,” Reed admonished and went to pick me back up, but I pushed his hand away.

I gritted my teeth and leaned on Ayana who had come up to my left.

“No, don’t. I’m fine,” I said through gritted teeth.

“You’re not fine. Don’t be stupid. If you put more pressure on that leg, you could do more damage to your knee.”

I shook my head. “I don’t care. You’re not carrying me.”

“There’s something wrong with you, do you know that? I’m trying to help you.”

“Yeah, and I’m trying to save your life.” I agreed back.

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

I directed Ayana to help me to a couch on the other side of the room. Noelle came over to my right and they practically carried me to the couch. I addressed Reed as I hobbled along. “If Lock sees you carrying me, he’s going to lose his shit.” I slowly lowered my battered body on the soft cushions of the couch. Ayana moved my legs so they stretched the length of the couch.

I looked up at Reed with my one good eye. “I’m serious,” I told him, Ayana confirmed it.

“She does have a point. My brother-in-law hates you. He finds you touching her, and it’s lights out for you.”

Reed, incredulously, rolled his eyes. “Please, that motherfucker could try, but I’d wipe the floor with his ass.”
