He shrugged. “Who knows. The last time I saw her a couple of my guys were having their way with her. They’re probably fucking the shit—”

I cut him off with a shot to the face using the butt of my gun. I hit him once, twice. When I went to hit him a third time he grabbed me by my vest, fell backwards and threw me up and over him. I rolled into the movement, lost my gun, but came up in a crouch. I faked as if I was going to dive at his midsection but at the last second came up and landed a vicious upper cut to his face.

Schindler doubled back, looking as if he was about to go down. However, that’s not what I wanted, I grabbed his shirt to right him and hit him with a one-two to the face, a knuckle punch to the solar plexus, knocking the wind right out of him, then I swung a hard right hook to his temple.

Schindler leaned back from my last shot, and I got him on the jaw. He still staggered but he didn’t fall. I had to give it to him. he was still on his feet. He was definitely a tough son of a bitch. I was sure he thought he could outmatch me. Oh how wrong he was.

He threw a punch toward my face, I ducked and continued to make mincemeat of his insides. All I kept thinking about was the shit he had done to Phoebe. The beatings, the mind-fucked games he played with her. How he treated her, tried to break her. All of those things ran through my mind as I beat the fuck out of this piece of shit. I didn’t hold back. My knuckles felt numb, my muscles strained with every hit. When the fucker went down, I followed, still hitting him until I heard a voice in my ear say stop.

It was a familiar voice, one that I hadn’t heard in weeks.

I stopped and glanced down at the figure underneath me. I could barely recognize him; his face was so bruised and red. I leaned back on my hunches, trying to catch my breath. My hands were dripping with blood, I didn’t care. I checked his chest and saw it wasn’t moving. Fuck…

I closed my eyes and tried to get my mind right, to climb out of the darkness I knew I slipped into. I couldn’t do it. I slowly rose to my feet, glanced around for my gun and found it a few feet away. I picked it up and was about to holster it when a figure emerged from the darkness in front of me. I raised my gun but didn’t fire. I recognized who it was.

Munoz stepped out of the darkness closer to Schindler. He kicked him with his boot.

“Remind me never to get on your bad side. I see now what Santos meant, but it looks like he doesn’t know the half of it.”

I didn’t reply.

“Is he dead?” Munoz asked his eyes focused on Schindler’s unmoving body.

“What the fuck do you think?”

Munoz pulled out his gun and sent two rounds into Schindler’s head. “Looks like I don’t have to think anymore, do I?” He raised his head and met my eyes. Cold deadly gaze meeting cold deadly gaze.

There was gunfire inside the house and my thoughts immediately went to Phoebe and the shit Schindler said to me.

“Go, Sergeant. I’ll clean this mess up,” Munoz said, his voice low, dark.

“Why would you do that? Out of the kindness of your heart?” I returned bitterly.

“Actually, yes. But not for you, no. I will do it for her.”

My back straightened. “Her who?”

“Let me put it this way. I didn’t come here to Dallas to expand my empire. I came here to find out what happened to my daughter. I had spoken to her once she was free from the man who abused her. She refused to tell me who it was, but she had told me all about Miss Gates and the kindness she showedmi princesa. She even told me the shit this piece of shit did to her.” Munoz kicked Schindler’s corpse again, a little harder this time. “She was free and I relaxed knowing when she made it back to Houston, I would get her to tell me who hurt her so I could bury him. But instead, I received a call that she was the one I needed to bury. I don’t condone the mistreatment of women, Sergeant. I’m not into the flesh trade. I actually detest it.” He shook his head and narrowed hard eyes at me. “Miguel and the men working for him don’t deserve to live out their lives in some federal pen. So,” he shrugged. “I will handle their penance myself.”

It was then that I heard screaming and yelling in the distance. “Noo, please, uncle, help me.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Santos is going to let you take his nephew?”

Munoz shrugged again. “Despite what you think, he’s a smart man. He does not want a war between us. He knows he would not win. Plus, he knows penance is owed to me by his nephew. So yes, as long as I leave and take his problems with me, he is happy. I will also take him too.” He kicked Schindler’s corpse. “And he will never be seen or heard from again. Count on it.” He then nodded to the house. “Now go, find your woman.”

And that’s what I did. I went in search of my woman. I searched all the rooms on the first floor. I found a few stragglers hiding. I took them down one by one. I called out Phoebe’s name as I moved throughout the house, praying I found her before I lost my shit. I made it to the front of the house and realized my guys were out there when I heard Ivey barking out orders for someone to drop their weapons, hands on your head, down on the ground and don’t fucking move.

When I reached the steps leading to the second level. I called out Phoebe’s name. I remained perfectly still and finally heard her call my name. I fucking flew up the steps, located the room where she was held and kicked the door with everything I had. It caved inside the room and my eyes went right to her.

My heart damn near stopped beating at the sight of her. Her face was bruised. She looked as if she had a little trouble breathing. One eye remained on me, and I was sure I was a fright, but she didn’t seem to care. Water flooded her one good eye even though both leaked of her tears. She mouthed my name and gave me one of her brightest smiles. It was then that the darkness finally subsided. I moved toward her, picked her up and carried her out of the room. I rested my forehead against hers and just stayed like that, breathing her in, taking solace that she was safe, in my arms.

She placed a soft palm to my face, caressing me. I went to kiss her, and she pulled back.

“No, I need to wipe my mouth.”

Frowning I asked, “Why?”

She narrowed her eyes on me. “Because he kissed me.” She made a disgusted face, and I couldn’t help but laugh.
