Page 5 of My Retribution Too

However, I kept Reed and Garrett’s identity a secret and got my friend away from her wretched life. Now she was back.

“Phoebe, don’t be pissed. I’m sorry for breaking the rules, okay, but I had no choice.”

I opened my eyes to find Ayana and Noelle staring at me intently. I hadn’t told them about Operation Freedom or the underground railroad, but from the look in their eyes, I would tell them soon. They would see to it.

I breathed out a sigh, resolved to my fate on all counts, and asked, “Okay, what’s going on?

“In my haste to get the hell out of my husband’s house, I had left my mother’s precious stones and jewelry.”

Oh no, not again…

“No, Ansley. This is a terrible idea.”

“No, listen. I need that jewelry. My mom gave it to me before she died. It’s all I have left of her memory.”

“Ansley, I understand but—”

“No, you can’t possibly understand. Your mother is still alive. Mine was taken from me violently.” Her voice had become frantic and angry. I knew there was no way I could talk her out of what she was planning, but I had to try.

“You’re right, I’m sorry. But maybe we can think of another plan. Something that doesn’t involve you coming back here, risking your future.”

“There’s no other way. Look, this will be a quick snatch and grab, okay? Easy peasy, trust me. I’m in front of his place now.” She admitted, and I shot up from my seat.

“You’re what!” I bellowed loudly, causing the people on the patio, and passersby, to look my way. Ayana and Noelle’s eyebrows shot up to their foreheads, and they stood too.

“I’m here.”

“Okay, Ansley. Seriously, you can’t go in there.”

“Yes, I can, and I will. The question is, will you come with me, or do I have to do this by myself?”

Shit…shit…shit…

This wasn’t going to end well. I felt it. I looked into the questioning gazes of my friends, thinking hard, but knowing I had only one choice.

I blew out a breath and tried to calm my now racing heart. “Where are you? What part of town?”

I could hear the smile in her voice when she replied, “I’m in Plano, closer to 75 and George Bush. I’ll send you the address. And Phoebe… thank you.”

“Okay, I’m on my way.”

I hung up the phone and placed wary eyes on my friends. This wouldn’t be easy.

“Who was that?” Ayana asked first.

“A friend.”

“Thought we were your only friends,” she quipped back.

I shrugged a shoulder. “I have one other one.” I answered back, took a deep breath, and started rummaging through my purse for some money. “Listen, I have to go meet my friend.”

“Where?” Noelle asked. She, too, started pulling out money from the pockets of her shorts.

Ayana followed suit and dropped two-hundred-dollar bills on the table covering our food, drinks and a healthy tip.

“You know you’re not going alone, right?”

“I have to,” I told them both, my eyes going from one to the other. “You two can’t come.”
