I knew my little speech went in one ear out the other, but it needed to be said.

I didn’t wait for Santos to respond. I signaled my guys to exit the room and I followed.

“What do you mean he’s gone?” Ivey yelled as we approached him standing in the foyer right in front of the front door. “How the fuck can he be gone if you were watching the place?” he was quiet listening to the caller then sighed and hung up.

“What?” I prompted.

Ivey ran his hand over his head. “Schindler is in the wind.”

“What?” Sol barked.

“Apparently, the security footage was tampered with. They didn’t see anyone coming or leaving.”

“Fuck!” Derek barked. “You put out a bolo on his ass?”

“Yeah, there’s one out.”

I had a bad feeling about everything, the call, the break in at my house, the fact that Homer was still alive, despite being outnumbered. Homer was talented in a fist fight, but he wasn’tthattalented…

“Ivey, get Homer and what’s the new kid you have watching the front of the house?”

“Penrose,” Ivey offered pulling out his phone and searching for the numbers.

“Yeah, him. Get them on the phone. Also send a couple more cars to my house. I want Phoebe moved to a new location, preferably to the safehouse above Ice’s.”

“You got it,” he opened the front door and stepped out into the night.

“You think we got trouble coming our way?” Sol asked me, as he walked out into the night. Derek, then I followed with Brady coming up behind me.

“I don’t know, I have a bad—” my voice trailed off when three things happened back-to-back no one had time to react. One, Ivey answered his ringing phone and I heard him yell, “Fuck someone his shooting up your house.”

Two, I glanced his way but out of the corner of my eyes I caught a bright flash appear in the distance. It took my brain a second to realize it was a muzzle flash, but I didn’t get a chance to warn anyone because the third thing happened. I was knocked on my ass, my chest on fucking fire. Brady lying on top of me. What I couldn’t work out before darkness took over my life was did I fall before Brady’s body crashed into me or after.

“LIFE DOESN’T ALWAYS GIVE YOU A SECOND CHANCE. SO, TAKE THE FIRST ONE.” - UNKNOWN

CHAPTER18

PHOEBE

“Why don’t you just move in here?”

That’s what Lock said to me this morning before he left for work.

“I can’t,” I had said to him.

We had been lying in the bed, wrapped up in each other’s arms, our breaths finally slowing down from some great hot morning sex. I rubbed his sweaty chest, feeling his heartbeat pound against my ear.

“Why can’t you?”

“Because…” I began, unable to hold the smile back from my face. “It’s too soon. Don’t you think?”

Lock had rolled me to my back and hovered above me. He caressed my cheek with the backs of his fingers.

“You do realize you pretty much have everything you own here.”

I chuckled. “I do not. I have a townhome full of stuff that proves otherwise.”

“Yes, a townhome you haven’t seen in months. Look, if it’s privacy you need, or you don’t want to lie in bed with me every night, there is a bedroom downstairs with your very own bathroom. You can use that. But you going to a hotel isn’t an option. Hell, I don’t even want you to go back to your townhome. So what other options do you have?”
