Page 98 of My Retribution Too

Another cocktail was thrown into the window. It landed right where I had been, igniting Homer’s body instantly.

I scrambled quickly to the garage door, opened it and stepped into darkness. I closed the door quickly, clawed the wall next to me looking for the key hook next to the door. My shaking fingers finally wrapped around a key fob. I pushed a few buttons and the lights to the Maxima came on.

I moved quickly to the car, using the yellow caution lights to guide me. I opened the door and closed it shut. I pushed the ignition button and the car purred to life.

Now I had to figure out how to open the garage. I looked around the car, searching for a garage door opener. But there wasn’t one.

Fuck…

That meant I had to get out and manually push the button. The garage was quickly filling with smoke. I didn’t have much time. With the car still running, I opened the car door and felt my way back to the garage door, remembering the garage door opener was right above the key hook. The garage was slowly filling up with smoke. I didn’t have much time.

I fiddled around until I found the button I needed.

The right garage door lifted, and I hurried back to the car, got inside and slammed the door closed. The moment I had enough space I backed out of the garage as if the devil himself was after me.

Gunshots rang out all around me, some hitting the car, some going elsewhere.

I screamed, ducked as best as I could and slammed the backend of the Maxima into another car. The collision jerked me forward and back, but I was able to keep control of the car. I hoped MJ and Lock forgave me for wrecking her car, but it was the best I could do.

I turned the wheel, righted the vehicle and sped away. More bullets pinged the car, shattering the back windshield, but I wasn’t stopping. I glanced back and saw Lock’s home engulfed in flames. I remembered I had to leave Homer and tears began to fall down my face. I wiped them free as best I could and focused on the road. I took a left then a quick right and did my best to put as much distance between who was waiting for me and death. For a moment, I allowed sadness to consume me before rage took over. The moment I was able, I made a left then a right and hauled ass, all the while trying not to cough up a lung or crash. I could barely see. My eyes were stinging from both the smoke and the tears burning my eyes.

I took another hard right, skidding on two wheels before I gained control. I drove on, desperately trying to keep it together. I had to keep my mind focused. I had to think of a plan of action and not about Lock or the constant pain in my chest, the ache. No, I focused on the anger. The rage.

I decided to drive to Garrett’s and Reed’s place. They were the only people I knew that had an army they could assemble because I would need one if I was going to go up against Byron. No doubt he had an army of his own, probably his old war buddies, the psychos.

I felt my phone vibrating underneath my butt, but I didn’t move to answer it. I didn’t want to hear from anyone. Not Byron and definitely not Ivey or any of his guys. I especially didn’t want to hear from Ayana. They would use her to get to me and hearing from her would be bad. I couldn’t handle any of it. Not yet. Not until I found this fucker and made him pay for what he’d done.

I arrived at Reed’s and Garrett’s warehouse. I pulled up right in front of the door, shut the engine down and climbed out of the car. I rushed to the door and began banging on it. I knew they were home. I saw both their cars in the parking lot along with a few others. And they wouldn’t have called it a night. They were night owls. They claimed to get their best work done at night.

The door suddenly opened, and Reed stood before me, sneering.

“What the fuck do you want?” he raged.

I ignored him and said with desperation filling my voice, “I need your help.”

He laughed. “Oh, now you want my help. Why don’t you go to your boy toy for help? Seems you two have gotten cozy over the weeks. Go ask him.”

“I can’t,” I said exasperatedly. “That’s why I’m here. Something happened to Lock, and I need your help to find the people responsible and make them pay.”

Wouldn’t you know the asshole laughed again. Oh how I wanted to punch him right in his nose.

“What happened? Did the cocky bastard run over the wrong people? Did he get himself shot? Or killed? I bet he got himself killed from the look on your face. Serves the fucker right. Arrogant ass—”

“What in the hell is wrong with you?” I cut him off, pushing him in his chest with everything I had. He rocked back slightly, but it was enough for him to cut the shit and understand I was serious.

“I came here for help. You’re supposed to be my friend. Help me.”

Reed, stepping out of the doorway and into my space, causing me to take a few steps back, narrowed his eyes on me. “Yeah, wewerefriends. That’s in the past. That fucking shit sailed the moment you chose that motherfucker over us.”

“I don’t believe this,” I ran my fingers through my matted hair. “Are you serious right now? How old are you?”

Reed didn’t like that, and he shut down. “You want help saving your man, find it somewhere else.”

With that, he turned on his heel, walked back to the warehouse, and slammed the door behind him. I stood there, stunned, fucking numb.

What was I going to do now?

My phone went off again, I pulled it out and stared at the screen. An unknown number was calling again.
