“You truly believe that?” Danny asked, and I nodded.

How many lifetimes had Calvin and I spent apart before we finally found each other in this one?

“I do,” I said firmly. “And you’ll learn a little more each time. That’s what this is all about.”

A long pause. He reached out to me, and for the barest trace of a second, I thought I could feel the pressure of his fingers on mine, just as I’d thought I’d seen a ghostly brush of his hand against Kimberly’s hair the afternoon before.

“Thank you, Selena,” he said.

And then he was gone…reallygone this time.

I stood there for a long moment, savoring the touch of the cool autumn breeze on my cheeks, the tang of fallen leaves and wood smoke on the air. So many reasons to relish every moment I was here on this earth, living this life.

Another breath, and then I went back into the church. I had to sit alone, but that was all right. Calvin would be off work at four, and we’d have dinner together, and then fall asleep in each other’s arms.

I had to hope that one day, Danny and Kimberly could be just as happy.
