I knock on the door the person seems to be behind, and a thin man opens it up. In his hand is Mel's phone. fuck, he's making this shit too easy.

"What do you want?" He snaps at me. His eyes are bloodshot, and I can tell by the way he keeps biting his lips he's high on something.

"I want your life, motherfucker.' I snarl at him and grab hold of his throat to keep him from screaming out. He tries to fight me off, but I pull out my butterfly knife and hook it inside his nose to keep him still. He whimpers and raises on his tiptoes to keep the blade from slicing through the thin skin.

"Is there anyone else here?" I ask, and he shakes his head no.

"If you're you're lying to me, I'm going to have to torture you slower because it means I'm going to have to kill them first. You don't want that do you?"I say, moving from one side of the door to the next. I kick the door closed behind me.

He shakes his head no again, and I can tell by the foam collecting at the sides of his mouth that he's going to be out of air soon. He continues to shake his head no, and after a second, I let him go but leave my knife shoved up his nostril. He drags in a bunch of air.

"What do you want? I don't have anything. I don't have anything!"He repeats over and over again.

"No, you don't, and you thought it would be okay for you to take things that don't belong to you."

"Are you here about the contract? I was only looking into it? I didn't know she had one out on her. I didn't even accept it!" The man has piqued my interest talking about this contract.

"What the fuck are you talking about? Start fucking talking right now." I pull the knife through his nostril, and blood starts pouring down the front of his shirt. He opens his mouth to scream, and I hook the blade against his cheek.

"Do it, I fucking dare you, and I swear by the time they find your body, you're going to look more like the joker than anyone in life." He doesn't close his mouth, but he doesn't scream either.

"The wallet I stole today, that's what you're talking about, right?

I nod my head.

"I ran the two kids' names through the system. Sometimes I get lucky and find people wanted by the police or others who pay me a ransom. I put her name in, and someone named Luke Di Cesare reached out about hiring me to bring her to him. I didn't take it. I'm not a bounty hunter."

Bile bubbles up in my throat. Fucking hell, this piece of shit bastard!

"That's good for you because you'd have to disappoint your new employer if you did. . You're not going to be able to do any jobs."

"What? What do you mean? Come on, man, I told you everything." The man whimpers with the knife still pressed against the inside of his mouth.

"I know, I believe you. One more thing before I leave you for the night."

"What, anything ." The man says eagerly, ready to get me out of his space.

"The necklace you stole from her? Where is it?"

"Oh, it's in the bag. I didn't have a chance to sell it. It's all still there."

"Really? Oh, you're a good man. Thank you so much for that."

I pull the knife out of his mouth, and the man sighs out in relief. "Yeah, sorry about all this, the bag is right over there. He points to the couch where I can already see it.

"No problem, you have a nice trip, you hear,"I tell him.

"What?" He asks, confused. Before he can figure out what's going on, I'm shoving him with all the strength I have straight through the large glass window and past the fire escape barrier. He falls the five stories down to the ground, and I hear the satisfying pop of his head as it hits the alley below. I see a few people on the other side of the street, one of them runs over, and I wait to see if they are going to try and revive the man whose brains have already started to leak out of his head. Instead, they dig in his pockets and take his wallet. Our little thief is going to be down there for a while. Now I need to worry about what the fuck I'm going to do about the Di Cesare family. This wasn't supposed to happen, but now that it has, I have to make sure I can handle it without Babbo having to step in and help me. This is my chance to prove I'm ready to come home.

CHAPTERFOUR

Melisande

I wake up to the sound of birds chirping in my window. I can smell the remnants of what used to be hot coffee, but I can tell by the way my body feels so rested that it's well past the time Xander gets up. I'll be lucky if I have a cup of lukewarm java to warm my bones.

I sit up in the bed and run my hand over my face, instantly flinching away at the pain. "Dammit!" I groan about and walk over to the bathroom. I hope it's not as bad as it feels. I look into the mirror and am happy to see instead of a large shiner, the only part of my face that seems to be affected by the hit from last night is right above my cheekbones. There's a nasty little bruise there, but besides that, I'm okay. I guess the bastard didn't hit me as hard as I thought he did. My hand instinctively goes up to my neck, but there's no chain there, and I feel the emotions building up inside of me. That chain meant the world to me. I spent all last night beating myself up for having it on. I should have left it somewhere safe instead of wearing it. I know that's ridiculous since I never took the damn necklace off, but I guess guilt is one way for me to deal with the loss. People will probably say at least you didn't lose your life, and that's true. I'm glad to be alive, but I hate feeling everything I had of my mother is gone. It just feels so final.

I try to push that thought out of my mind and get on with my day. I hop into the shower, and the nice hot water does a great job of waking me up. I blow dry my hair and put on my best fluffy pajamas. There's no way I'm going anywhere today. I'm grateful I don't have any classes because I was definitely going to miss any lectures I had today.
