“Where’s her house, Blaise?” Avery said, keeping so fucking calm that I hated him.

“Fuck!” I growled. “She’s fucking gone!”

Something deep inside me knew. I fucking knew that Vera hadn’t made it home. She should’ve … she should’ve fucking told me where she was going, that she needed me to pick her up. I would’ve come in a fucking second.

“Where’s her house?” Avery asked again.

“The slums,” I said, looking out the window at every house, every person, every shadow to see if it was her.

She wouldn’t take the long way home, not in this cold weather. She would be on the sidewalk, out in the open.

“We’ll find her.”

“No, we fucking won’t.”

“She’ll be at home.”

“She wouldn’t have made it home in a few fucking minutes. She’s gone.”

Vera was fucking gone because of that bitch who wanted me to call hermother.Vera was gone, and I would—my throat closed up—never see her again. I’d tried so hard for her to be mine, to keep her safe. Now, I’d lost her.

I’d fucking lost her.

I banged my fist against the dashboard again. “No. No. No. No. No. No. No.”

“Settle down, Blaise,” Avery said, pulling into the slums. “Tell me where to go.”

“Two streets down. One-story house.”

Avery followed my directions and pulled up to the side of the road in front of João’s house. I leaped out of the car again and sprinted toward Vera’s house. None of the lights were on, but I smashed the front door open and searched every last inch of that house for her.

“No,” I cried, voice fucking trembling. “Fucking no. You can’t be gone. You can’t.”

She was the only person that I fucking cared about, the only woman to ever care about me. If she was gone, if Avery was wrong and they killed her instead of using her like they had with Skylar, then … my life would be for nothing.

Every moment we’d ever had together would be gone.

After I tore her bedroom to shreds, I placed two hands on the bed and collapsed onto it. My legs were too weak to hold myself up any longer. My chest tightened more by the second. The tears that had welled up in my eyes now streamed down my face.

“Vera,” I cried, head hanging low, “p-please, fight them.”

Memories of her smile, of the way she had hopped onto my skateboard and ridden with me at the park, of having pizza, of ice cream at the Overlook, of every fucking moment we’d spent together drifted through my mind.

“Blaise,” Avery said from the door, “she’s not here. We must—”

“No fucking shit!” I growled, pushing the tears from my cheeks so I wouldn’t seem like a bitch to him.

I stood up, pushed past him, and marched across the street to João’s house.

I pounded my fist against the door. “Open the fuck up, João!”

A moment later, Landon—the muscle of Poison—opened the door. Kai, João, and Ana sat in the small living room, looking over at me. I stormed into the house with Avery hot on my heels and glared at João.

“Tell me you know where she is.”

“Where who is?”

Anger rushed through me. This wasn’t his fucking fault, but I couldn’t stop myself. I snatched his collar and lifted him off the couch. “Vera, you fucking asshole. Tell me you know where she is.”
