The kid snorted. “Didn’t think so. Vera’s too nerdy to date anyone.”

Knowing that I wasn’t going to get anywhere with this kid like this, I nodded to the controller in his hand. Vera would be back sooner or later, and I didn’t want to go back home to wait. “What game are you playing?”
“Raid of Durnbone.”
“You got an extra controller?”

Iwaited impatiently in the gynecologist’s lobby, my knees bouncing. While I really wanted to get on birth control, my stomach was turning at the thought of actually being sexually active. With Blaise.
The characters in my stories could have sex with every male in sight every single day and never had to worry about getting pregnant. Stupid fictional world and that insane body-betrayal syndrome.
“So, let me get this straight,” Maddie whispered, leaning forward toward Piper and me. “He was touching you in the back of History, The Grinch caught you guys and threatened to suspend you, and then he told her to shove it.” Maddie clutched her heart and grinned like a maniac. “Gah! Then, he fucked you in the stairwell. Girl, I-I don’t even have any words.”
“You apparently have a lot of them!” I whisper-yelled at her. “Please, be quiet.”
“I bet you say that to Blaise too, huh?” Piper chimed.
After playfully narrowing my eyes at these girls who were supposed to be my best friends, I pulled out my phone and texted Mateo. He usually expected me home right after work. I never took a detour anywhere without telling him. Mom was working late again, and he’d be home by himself.
Me: I’ll be home soon. Please tell me you’re okay.
As I waited for his reply, a nurse walked out from the back room. “Vera Rodriguez.”
Maddie pushed me toward the door. “Tell Dr. Patel that I said thank you.”
Once I made it into the back room, I sat alone for another five minutes before a young woman with tan skin and huge brown eyes walked in with a blue clipboard.
“Vera Rodriguez, I’m Dr. Patel. What brings you in today?”
“I was hoping to get on birth control,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Are you sexually active?” she asked.
My cheeks flushed. “Yes.”
She sat across from me and smiled. “No need to be embarrassed, sweetheart. We can find a plan that works for you, depending on your needs, desires, and schedule. We have a few options to choose from—the most popular being the pill, an IUD, or a shot.”
For the next thirty minutes, she explained each and every option in detail. I stared at the pamphlet that she had given me and nervously scratched the back of my neck. Blaise was supposed to pick me up later, and I didn’t know if I could convince him not to fuck me again tonight. Actually, screw that. With this BBS, I didn’t know if I would be able to control myself.
“Is there anything that works immediately?” I asked, swallowing my nerves.
“Not immediately. Each will take about seven days to go into effect.”
Seven days.
Seven days felt like an eternity. Hell,last nighthad felt like the longest damn night of my life to me.
“Okay, I’ll, um …” I rubbed my sweaty palms together. “I’ll take the pills because we’ll have to schedule another appointment for the IUD and shot, right?”
