VERA

When Jim actually decided to wait for my break, I anxiously tapped the counter. What the fuck had I done? Why was he actually waiting? I’d just wanted to flirt with him a little. I hadn’t thought he would actually take something like that seriously.

What would happen when I took my break? Would he actually want to go into a back room and fuck me? That was what I had insinuated, but I … I didn’t know what the hell had been going through my head. I just wanted Blaise to feel like shit.

Jim walked around the library with his books for a couple minutes, then took a seat on the couch next to Blaise. With his jaw clenched and eyes narrowed at the kid, Blaise looked more furious than ever.

He said something to Jim that I couldn’t quite hear. Jim looked over at him, at me, then said a few words back. All of a sudden, Blaise grabbed Jim by the upper arm, yanked him into the air, and dragged him, stumbling, to the doors.

They stepped out for a few moments, and I secretly hoped that Jim wouldn’t come back inside for the rest of the night. I didn’t want Blaise to hurt him, but I definitely didn’t want to feel obligated to have sex with him today.

I stared at the front doors, hoping to catch a glimpse of them outside on the sidewalk. But rain poured down so hard and so loud that I couldn’t even see or hear any talking or yelling, which made my stomach turn.

“Sweetheart,” Sue said, nudging my arm. “You can have your break now. When you come back, I have to leave to see my sister. Will you be okay with closing alone tonight? I know you always do it, but I like to try to stay behind as much as I can for you.”

“I’ll be okay,” I said to Sue, smiling at her. “Thanks.”

After grabbing my phone, I disappeared into the break room and locked the door behind me. Outside, rain pounded down on the roof even harder. Because I could barely see outside anyway, I pulled down the blinds and grabbed a cookie from a tray that Sue had brought earlier.

It was the only thing that I had to eat for dinner. I had emotionally eaten the snack I’d packed during lunch because I needed to get my mind off Blaise. I hadn’t been able to think clearly all day because of him.

Collapsing at the back table, I checked my phone to see twenty new notifications since three o’clock about the chapter I had released online last night. More people had commented, asking when the next chapter would be released, and I … felt so giddy.

For the first time today, I let myself smile.

Quite a few people had actually enjoyed my story, something that I’dneverthought would happen. Maybe tomorrow, I’d have to type a couple chapters up on my phone while I watched João’s little sister.

Once I finished my break, I took a deep breath and walked behind the counter. With his hair wet, Blaise sat on the couch alone, like nothing had even happened outside. When he saw me, he tapped his shoe on the ground impatiently.

I tore my gaze away from him, hoping he was pissed and hurt, and walked behind the counter.

Sue pulled on her raincoat and placed a shaky hand on my shoulder. “You can have the rest of those cookies. Be careful tonight. There’s supposed to be a big storm. You should close a bit earlier than usual.”

“I’ll be fine,” I said, smiling. “Have a good time with your sister.”

Sue held her purse tightly in her hands as she walked past Blaise. When she reached the door, she looked back at me and waved. “Bye, sweetheart. Be safe tonight. I’ll see you on Monday.”

When Sue left, Blaise stood and made a beeline for me. I slid behind the counter and busied myself with checking in hundreds of books and pretending like I didn’t see anyone at the counter. Nobody else was here now anyway.

“Who the fuck was that kid?”

I glanced up at him. “What kid?”

“Don’t fuck around with me,” he growled. “The guy you were fucking flirting with.”

“Who, Jim?” I said, unsure of what the hell was happening to me because I’d never had the type of confidence to piss off someone like Blaise like this. “Oh, I’ve just been talking to him for a few days now.”

“You’re fucking bullshitting me.”

“I’m not lying,” I said, pushing back my shoulders and staring him right in the eye. “I met him at the store while I was buying Plan B becauseyou’dhad to be an asshole. He helped me find the best one and told me he wanted to take me out.”

Jealousy mixed with … hurt crossed Blaise’s face. He shook his head. “You’re lying.”

“Why do you think he was waiting for my break?”

“You’re fucking lying,” he ground out, balling his hands into tight fists.

“He’s studying to be an engineer,” I said, coming up with the most ridiculous excuse for those library books. “He’s so smart, witty, and he’s actually going to make himself someone someday. He doesn’t have to rely on his daddy’s money.”
