I skated up next to him and hopped off my board, shoving my hands against his chest. “Why don’tyouget out ofmyfucking way?”

He pushed me back. “Don’t be a prick.”

I straight-up fucking laughed in this kid’s face. “Or what? You gonna hit me?”

The asshole hurled his fist right into my left eye. I rejoiced in the fucking pain, stumbled back to regain my balance, then lunged at him, letting my fist fly into his jaw and sending him down onto the concrete.

He scraped the skin of his palms and knees against the ground. Then, he spit up some blood and struggled to stand, grabbing his board and stepping away from me. “This is why everyone fucking hates you,” he growled, storming away and disappearing through the trees that surrounded the park.

After he left, I grumbled to myself and touched my eye, which would be swollen by tomorrow. I walked over to an empty bench and sat down, grabbing my board and smashing it against the ground. I fucking hated myself.

What the fuck was wrong with me?

I glanced around the park, looking for someone else to fuck with.

Gunther Zurn—a kid from Redwood who frequented the skatepark with his buddies—stood near a bench with one foot on his skateboard as he talked to … Callan Avery, a professor at Redwood.

Mr. Avery stepped closer to Gunther and pulled something out of his pocket, sticking it against Gunther’s abdomen. He spoke a few tense words with Gunther and shoved him back.

Yes, a fucking teacher at Redwood pushed one of his students, and nobody would ever give a shit about it either if they found out, especially with Callan’s ties to the Redwood mob.

Gunther kicked up his skateboard, tossed it over his shoulder, then stormed out of the park, disappearing through the thick brush of trees surrounding this place. Callan tucked a gun back into his waistband and looked around, his gaze landing on me. Then, he walked over.

While he might’ve scared off everyone else, he didn’t scare me. Callan—my uncle—was more of a father than my own dad. Hell, he had probably even slept with my mother a handful of times too. Who the fuck knew shit anymore?

“What’re you doing with Gunther?” I asked him.

He wouldn’t be threatening a teenager for nothing. Gunther had to have done something to Avery, either during school or with hisbusinessoutside of the classroom. Avery didn’t threaten people for the hell of it.

He cocked a brow up at me. “None of your business.”

After rolling my eyes, I hopped on my board and skated down the halfpipe ramp. “Fine.”

“You don’t tell anyone what you saw,” he said to me, stalking closer and stepping under the dim overhead light that ignited the skatepark after dark. “And what the fuck happened to your eye? You get into a fight?”

I stopped my board inches from his feet and kicked it up, staring him right in the eye and looking for another fight. I knew that he wouldn’t give me one, but, fuck, I wanted it so fucking badly. “None of your business,” I said through gritted teeth.

“You should be at home.”

“Youshould be at home with yourlovely wife,” I said, spitting his words back at him.

We both knew that his wife—my dad’s sister—was anything other than lovely. She was a spitting image of my father—absent from everyone’s life, except her own, and didn’t give a shit about anything other than how she could flaunt her money. She was an annoying fucking bitch.

“What happened to Vera Rodriguez?” he asked back, testing my patience apparently. Usually, he didn’t stoop so low, but something must’ve really pissed him off. “I heard from a certain gang that you’ve been seeing her.”

“Shut your fucking mouth,” I growled, storming away from him before I punched him square in the jaw.

He might’ve been older than me and armed with a weapon, but I would knock his ass out cold right here.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

BLAISE

The next day, I stared into my empty locker and clenched my jaw, fingers tightening around my skateboard. World History had started twenty minutes ago. I hadn’t wanted to fucking come to school today, but I couldn’t stop myself from driving here this morning.

With Skylar knowing Vera’s and my secret, I expected everyone to be buzzing with excitement over the newfound drama of me fuckingVera, the senior class’s nerdy good girl. But I hadn’t heard anything this morning, not even on social media.

If Skylar had opened her big fat mouth about Vera and me, word would’ve already spread through Redwood. So, it seemed like she hadn’t, and part of me was fucking thankful, because while I didn’t give a fuck who knew about us, Vera did.
