“What’s it about? You’re on, like, chapter sixty already.”

“Um …”

I chewed on the inside of my cheek and glanced away from him, unable to keep eye contact. I didn’t want him to know that I was writing a story about us. I didn’t know what would happen next, and I didn’t want it to end. I hoped that our story would be as beautiful as the fictional ones that I wrote about, where the girl always got the guy, no matter the problems they faced. I wanted us to be as happy as those couples one day.

Iwanted to be as happy as those girls because I had never been before.

I didn’t want to jinx us.

“It’s this cheesy, cliché high school romance,” I said, waving at him. “You wouldn’t like it.”

“Try me.”

Gripping the laptop harder, I stared down at the metal and hoped he dropped it. I didn’t want him to think that I was obsessed with him. I might have been, but I didn’t want to seem crazy. I wanted to keep us like this for as long as I could.

“Come on, Sunshine. Share it with me.”

He reached for my laptop, but I pushed his hands away and scrambled off the bed.

“Not right now. I’ll let you read it when I’m finished.” Though … that might’ve been a lie, depending on whether or not we were still together.

Maybe one day, he’d get bored of me. Rich kids did that a lot.

But as much as I tried to convince myself, that didn’t seem like Blaise.

“You’re going to make me wait?”

“Yes.”

He playfully rolled his brown eyes. “But I’m your number one fan.”

Butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Warmth spread throughout my chest. And a damn smile broke out on my face. I couldn’t stop all those tiny little feelings erupting through me. Blaise loved reading my work. The bad boy—the guy who always got into fights, skateboarded around school, and didn’t give a fuck about anyone or anything—wasmynumber one fan.

And it wasn’t a lie either.

I peeked over at his laptop to see my writing profile bookmarked on his computer.

A small giggle escaped my lips, and Blaise stared at me with a goofy smile of his own.

“What are you laughing about? I can’t be my girl’s number one fan?”

There it was again.

My girl.

“Hmm?” he asked, pulling me into his arms and onto the bed, his fingers gently digging into my sides to tickle me. “I can’t be your biggest supporter?”

I laughed into a pillow so hard that tears formed in my eyes. “I’m not laughing about anything, I promise,” I said between giggles. When I finally got him to stop with the tickling torture, I straddled his waist and wrapped my arms around his shoulders, my laughter dying. “I hope that you’ll love my story as much as I do when I share it with you one day.”

ChapterSixty-One

BLAISE

Vera’s shrill scream jerked me awake. I shot up in my bed, realizing that she wasn’t next to me anymore even though we had fallen asleep together last night, and twisted my head toward the door.

Mom had a fistful of Vera’s hair in her grasp, dragging her to the door. Mom’s hand was wrapped so tightly around the locks of Vera’s silky brown hair, and she was yanking her so forcefully and so quickly that Vera couldn’t even scramble to her feet.

“Get the fuck off her!” I shouted, jumping to my feet, shoving myself between them, and forcing Mom back into the hallway. I glared at the pure spite and jealousy in her eyes, the way she sneered at Vera, who had been doing nothing but sleeping in my bed. “What the fuck is wrong with you?!”
