She leaned forward and brushed some hair off my forehead. Her face swam in my view, rearranging itself but not quite settling into one distinct person.

She morphed from Victoria to Madame le Blanc to... my mother.

I gasped. “You.”

“Oh, good. It seems the time for games is finally at an end. Sleep, dearest. There will be time for us to have a little mother-daughter chat when you wake up.”

As darkness took hold, the pounding of hooves filled my ears, and three women materialized behind my mother.

That’s when I knew. The horsewomen weren’t coming.

They were already here.

And my mother was one of them.

ChapterThirty-Eight

CALEB

Soft and warm, Eden laid on my chest, her tiny body nestled against me. Safe. Whole. Perfect.

“You look so good with her in your arms,” Sunday said, standing in the doorway of the nursery, a smile curving her lips as the sun beamed in through the window. “I didn’t hear her wake up.”

“Well, she kept you up all night. It’s my turn. You need your sleep,a stor.” I ran my hand over Eden’s downy soft hair, inhaling her scent. She smelled like all of us, but most prominent was her mother’s lilac and honey. Pressing my lips to the baby’s head, I let the feeling of pure happiness wash over me.

“Come here to me, darling. I want both my girls in my arms.”

“Okay, Daddy.”

There was a playful smirk in her words, the double entendre more meaningful now than ever.

“She’s asleep, you know. You can put her in her crib.”

“Aye, but I don’t want to let her go.”

She joined us on the daybed, curling into my side and making this moment truly perfect. I wanted for nothing. I held all I’d ever prayed for in my arms. A loving wife. A healthy baby girl.

Nothing could make me happier.

“Caleb... I have something I need to tell you.”

I tensed, cursing myself for jinxing it.

“What’s wrong?”

She laughed. “Nothing’s wrong. I just... have a surprise for you.”

Raising one brow, I gave her a stern look. “What have you been up to, Mrs. Gallagher?”

“I think you should ask yourself that question, husband.”

“Me? What have I done?”

Her lips trailed over my heart as she stroked Eden’s back. “You told me you wanted a big family.”

Pulse racing as her words landed, I caught her hand in mine. “Sunday...”
