“You were in heaven. He said you were.”

“Aye.”

“Then why are you here?”

He cupped my face, staring down at me with eyes that searched mine for some unnamable reason. What did he want me to say? To do?

“For you, Sunday. I’m here for you.” He slid his palm over me, assessing my form with a smile. “Are you healed? Are you all right? Is Eden...”

“She’s beautiful and perfect. Kingston has her now. And I’m good as new. Your blood fixed me and then some.”

“A worthwhile sacrifice if ever there was one. I’d do it all over again to save you.”

My lip trembled, the memory of his still form beside mine too fresh. “I’d rather you didn’t.”

“Loving you means I will always value your life above my own. Being a father means Eden’s needs supersede my selfish desires. Our daughter needs you far more than she does me,a stor. So, like it or not, I will always put you first. You’re mine. You always will be.”

“But why? He broke the spell. He set you all free.”

Caleb’s brows furrowed, and he pulled back slightly as if seeking a better view. “What are you going on about? What spell?”

Even though it nearly killed me, I untangled myself from his arms and stepped away. “The love spell my mother used. None of us would have been together without her meddling. It’s why you thought I was your mate. It’s why you broke your vows.”

Caleb laughed. That fucker actually laughed.

“Well, I didn’t think it was very funny.”

“Miss Fallon, you cannot really believe a spell is responsible for all that transpired between us. That was fate, darling girl. And fate alone. I was destined to be yours.”

“I wish that was true.”

“It is.” He lifted my hand and placed it on his chest, right over his heart. “Do you feel that?”

The steadythump-thumppulsed under my palm. “Yes.”

“A made vampire’s heart only beats once they find their true mate. If the spell was the reason I fell for you, surely my heart would no longer be beating now that it was over.”

“But...”

“It’s for you. Only you, Sunday. You’re my mate. No matter what kind of plot your mother thought she’d been part of, that much is true. I would’ve chosen you regardless.”

His gaze trailed over my neck and shoulder, eyes narrowing. “Where’s your mark?”

“I... I asked Gabriel to free you all. To lift the spell and give you back your lives. He broke the bonds.”

Pain and something a lot like anger blazed in his eyes. “How could you doubt us? Doubt me?”

God, this hurt. I couldn’t rejoice in him being back. Not with the look of betrayal on his face.

Jaw set, he took my hand. “Do they know?”

“What?”

“Do they know what you did?”

“N-no. It just happened.”

“Fecking hell. Come on.”
