Ash slipped her hand into mine, giving it a warm squeeze. “Everything’s going to be all right. She wouldn’t have invited us if she didn’t think we’d be successful.”

“I’m more worried about why she wants to be successful.”

“She’s not in control of what happens after we find Sunday. So her reasoning doesn’t really matter, does it?” Ash raised her brow, showing an uncharacteristic hint of sass.

I liked it. “Well, well, it looks like I’m rubbing off on my girl.”

Her lips twitched, and she flicked her gaze to the ground. “You certainly rubbed something this morning.”

“And I’ll do it again tonight just to spite them.”

Her blush deepened and she started to let go of my hand, but I gripped hers harder, refusing to release her. “Nuh-uh. You’re my girlfriend. If they can’t accept that, then fuck ’em. I’m done pretending to be somebody else for them, Ash. We’re a team. Period. There are plenty of same-sex couples in the coven. The rules shouldn’t be different for me just because I’m a Belladonna.”

“We can figure out how to have a baby if you want. Smooth things over by giving your grandmother the heir she’s after. You know that, right?”

My stomach churned. “I’m not ready to talk about anything that life-changing. Let’s get Sunday through deliveringherspawn first, okay?”

A soft chuckle left Ash as she nudged me with her shoulder. “I love you,” she whispered, offering me a sweet smile. “No matter what. Kids, no kids. Magic, no magic. It doesn’t matter to me. I just want you.”

My heart somersaulted into my stomach as I stared at the woman who was far too good for me. I had to make sure she never figured it out. I was beyond lucky to have her. Pulling her in close, I kissed her. “Love you too, baby.”

“Please tell me there’s food in this house? I’m fucking starving,” Kingston called from behind us, breaking the moment.

“I’m sure we can fry up some eye of newt for you, wolf boy,” I teased as I stopped on the first step leading to the porch and turned to face them. “Oh, or maybe some dead man’s toe.”

Kingston gagged. “No thanks, I’ll just go hunt some squirrels or teach myself how to fish.”

Why did the thought of Kingston dressed in fisherman’s gear give me the giggles?

“You idiot. Yes, there is food. Witches eat too. For fuck’s sake,” Alek grumbled. “Even the vampires fed us, or don’t you remember?”

“I might have blocked out a lot of our time at that place. Nothing good happened there.” Kingston’s grin turned slightly evil as he shot Alek a sideways glance. “Except for hearing you scream like a little girl.”

“Oh, I forgot to mention Belladonna house also has a ghost or two. Don’t worry, Alek, they won’t bother you.”

I couldn’t hide my smile as he paled. There was something so adorable about big strong Alek afraid of, well, anything.

“Honestly, a Viking scared of a non-corporeal being? Who would’ve guessed?” Thorne shoved his hands into his pockets and smirked. “They can’t hurt you, Alek.”

“Ever heard of a vengeful spirit? I promise you, they can hurt. They watch you when you don’t know they’re in the room, just waiting until you’re naked.”

“This sounds an awful lot like a book I once read,” Kingston said.

“You know how to read?” Thorne drawled.

“Fuck off.”

“What was the title of this book?Goodnight Moon? The Gruffalo?”

“I call itGhost Dick. It’s about this earl and a lady at an inn in a snowstorm.”

Thorne’s brows rose. “Are you telling me you not only read, but you read historical romance novels?”

Something about that warmed my heart a little.

“There’s a reason I’m a better lover than you, Thorne. I not only read it, I take notes. Trust me, Sunday doesn’t have any complaints.”

Alek leaned closer to Kingston and murmured, “Can I borrow that book?”
