Where the hell was she?

I was in the middle of grinding on the dance floor with some cute girl I had no intention of doing anything more than dancing with. I was having fun, but it was getting close to the time to move on.

I turned around, looking for Dream. She’d gone off to the bar to grab a couple of shots of Fireball - my favorite - and hadn’t come back. In the middle of my dancing, I’d tried to spot her.

The girl I’d been dancing with, a tall brunette with a nose ring and an arm covered in tattoos, turned around and wrapped her arms around my neck, smiling at me in a way that made it clear she was mine for the taking. Hell, the way she was looking at me made me think I could’ve nodded toward the bathroom and had her naked in one of the stalls in less than a minute.

However, sex was the last thing on my mind. Even if I weren’t looking for Dream, I wasn’t in the mood. It felt like other women just didn’t hold the same appeal now that Dream was back in town.

The brunette gave me the look, the one where they narrowed their eyes and curled up one side of their mouth, the one that said, “alright, let’s cut the crap and get into bed.”

“So,” she said. “Want to get out of here?”

It didn’t matter that she was offering herself up to me like a main course – I was starting to get worried about Dream. I glanced over my shoulder and spotted a college-aged guy about my height dancing alone. I recognized him as the guy who’d been hitting on the brunette before she and I had started dancing. Without a word, I ducked out from under her arms and turned to the guy.

“Yo, dude – mind holding my place?” Before waiting for his answer, I put my hand on his shoulder and weaved him under the girl’s arms. The brunette looked a little surprised but didn’t seem too bothered.

“Uh,” said the guy. “Want to dance?”

She smiled. “Sure.”

Just like that, I was free, and I immediately began looking around again for Dream. Red’s wasn’t huge, and it didn’t take me much time at all to cover the floor.

I didn’t see her anywhere. As I took a break to lean against the bar and collect my thoughts, I spotted a pair of guys opening a side door and stepping into the back alley. I couldn’t think of any reason why Dream would want to go out there, but it was the one place I hadn’t checked.

I hurried toward the door and opened it, stepping out into the cool night air. A few people were out smoking, but further down the alley I spotted someone familiar.

Scratch that – I spotted two someone’s familiar.

Jay and Dream were getting close – very close.

What the hell was going on?

I was relieved that I’d found Dream. But that didn’t answer the question of why she’d run out here, or what she was doing with Jay.

One way to find out.

“Well, howdy, kids!” I shouted, stepping around the pair as they spoke in hushed tones to one another. “Hope I’m not interrupting anything!”

Their eyes flashed and their mouths opened into “O” s of surprise, letting me know I very much had interrupted something.

What it was, I had no damn idea.

“What the hell are you doing, Evan?” Jay growled, anger in his eyes. “Why the shit would you sneak up on us like that?”

I shrugged as I placed my hand on the brick wall and leaned against it. As I stood there, I realized that I was tipsy. Not full-on drunk, I still had my head on straight, but enough to where my already low inhibitions were even lower.

“Just saw you guys having a private conversation and figured I’d join in. We’re all family, right? I mean, not technically. But you know.”

“Well, you ruined the damn moment, dick,” Jay grumbled. His eyes flashed with surprise, and I realized that he’d just said something that he hadn’t intended to say.

“Oh, so that means there was a moment to ruin, huh?” I asked. “What were you guys getting up to out here anyway?”

Dream still looked startled. I’d known her for long enough to see that she wasn’t in the middle of some emotional crisis, so I didn’t feel too bad about jumping in. But as I stood there looking her up and down, I couldn’t resist how I felt about her at that moment.

She was stunning – just hot as hell. Her sexy legs were barely covered by the tight skirt she had on, and the little hint of midriff from her cropped shirt was enough to make me wild with desire. It was strange, really. I’d spent years trying to ignore how I felt about her, but right then and there it was as if I’d decided I was tired of pretending.
