I felt strange when all the words finally came out of me. I also felt…relieved. Mom just stood there, finally shaking her head before stepping over to the fridge to put away her bottle of wine. After closing the door, she leaned against the fridge and sighed.

“Well, you’re not the only one who’s been through a rough breakup,” she said. “I know what it’s like.” She glanced away as if she were thinking about something in a difficult way. Then she shook her head. “Handle this situation however you want. But I’m your mom, remember. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I were to stand idly by and not offer my opinion on whatever’s going on in your life.” A small smile formed on her lips. She was being pushy and headstrong as ever, but at least in that moment she seemed to have tried to look at things from my perspective.

“Anyway, I should get all of this home and see what I’ve got. Farmer’s market is tomorrow, so I need to get ready.”

Mom watched as I scooped the box off the counter and started out. She followed me, opening the door.

“The farmer’s market isn’t really my thing,” she said as she saw me off. “But maybe I’ll drop by. I might even wear my sports bra so you can paint a little something on my belly.” She followed this up with another smile, and I wryly chuckled as I heaved the box into the back of Clarissa’s car.

Moments later I was on the road. As I drove, I realized that between staying at Clarissa’s place and using her car and Mom holding onto my things for me, I was entirely dependent on other people at that moment in my life. I vowed to get things together ? to buy my own car, to rent my own place and finally, truly, start this new phase of my life.

I didn’t have too long to think it over. My phone rang and I saw that it was a call from Jay. My stomach tightened as memories of last night came rushing back. Part of me wanted to dismiss the call, but the idea of ignoring the guys seemed cruel. Plus, we needed to talk after what went down at Red’s.

“Hey.” I turned the phone onto speaker and put it in the holder on my dashboard.

“Hey. What’s up?” As weird as what had happened last night might’ve been, it was still good to hear his voice.

“Not much, just driving home from Mom’s. You know, I think this is the first time in a long while that someone’s called me who wasn’t a robo-dialer.”

He chuckled. “Glad to stand out.”

There was an awkward pause. It was as if neither of us knew quite what to say.

Finally, Jay cleared his throat and spoke. “Uh, I was calling just to see how you were doing. And…to say I’m sorry for making things weird at the bar last night.”

It was a relief to hear the words.

“You’re back in town and trying to get settled in and the last thing you need are a couple of horny dudes pouncing on you. It was bullshit, and I’m sorry.”

He meant the apology, and I appreciated that. But at the same time, hearing him say the words “pouncing on you” was enough to make my pussy clench. I shifted in my seat, trying not to think about how freaking hot it had been, despite the awkwardness.

“Thanks. It’s not your fault, you know. It takes two to tango, after all. Or three, in this case.”

He laughed. “Good. And I didn’t just call to apologize – I wanted to see if I could make it up to you.”

“Make it up to me? How?”

“I don’t know. Anything you need help with? Not sure if you’re planning on moving, but I’ve got the truck and—”

“The farmer’s market!” I shouted.

“Huh?”

“I’m setting up a booth there for tomorrow evening. If you want, it’d be a huge help to bring my stuff there and help me set up.”

“Sure, absolutely. What time?”

“Well, I need to work a little in the morning, and the market starts at one and goes until the sun goes down. I’d need help getting my stuff there then getting it back. I’m sure you’re busy, but—”

“Done. I’ll do it.” There wasn’t a trace of hesitation in his voice.

I couldn’t help but smile.

“Alright, great. You know where Clarissa lives, right?”

“Pretty sure. But send me the address to be on the safe side.”

“You got it. And…thanks, Jay.”

“My pleasure.”

The call ended right as I pulled up to Clarissa’s place. I parked and sent him the address, a thumbs-up response following seconds later.

Then I smiled. My life was crazy, and what had happened with the guys had only made it more so. However, there was something about the Wolf brothers, something that made me certain things were only just getting started between us.
