“You shouldn’t be with him. You deserve better. In fact, if I had my way you’d be with me.”

I finally managed to shut myself up, but it was too late. The expression on her face let me know that I’d possibly crossed a line that I wouldn’t be able to come back from.

“You want me to be with you?” she asked.

“That’s right. You’re the one I want, Dream. I get that this might seem out of left field, and it might make you uncomfortable to hear, and if that’s the case, I’m sorry. But it’s the truth, and it’s how I’ve felt for a long time.”

As soon as I finished speaking, I felt…relief. I wasn’t regretful, I didn't feel like an idiot. OK, maybe a little bit of an idiot, but I was relieved as hell that I’d finally gotten it off my chest. Years and years I’d carried around the true nature of my feelings for Dream and now they were out in the open.

She broke eye contact with me, turning her attention to the glass of wine. Her hand shot out and she grabbed the glass by the stem, bringing it to her lips and taking a quick sip.

There was a damn good chance I’d screwed up, that I’d ruined things between us. As happy as I was to have put it all out there like that, I reminded myself that there was no guarantee she felt the same way. For all I knew, she was trying to come up with a way to tell me to screw off.

I had to give her an out.

“Listen, this is a lot to take in, I get it. You’re here trying to relax after what you heard about Adam, and here I am, making it even more complicated. So, if you want me gone, just say the word and I’ll leave without protest.”

She took another sip of wine and nodded. Then Dream set down the glass and continued staring ahead.

Finally, she shook her head. “I don’t want you to go. I want you to stay. And I’m glad you’re here.” She turned to me, her expression softening, a small smile forming on her lips.

My heart skipped a beat, and when she reached forward and placed her hand on mine, I had a damn good feeling that things were about to get very interesting.
