DUNCAN

“Yo, dude! Turn it the other way!”

“I am turning it the other way!”

“Not your other way! My other way!”

I could barely see Evan over the massive couch that we were in the process of carrying up the small flight of stairs that led into Dream’s new place. But with some doing, Evan and I managed to turn the thing and fit it through.

“You got it!” shouted Clarissa, clapping her hands and jumping up and down as we made our way over the threshold and set the couch down on the ground.

“That…that was surprisingly heavy for an Ikea couch.” I glanced down at the long, pink piece of furniture. “What is it, filled with bowling balls?”

Clarissa laughed. “That’s not Ikea, believe it or not. That’s some vintage piece my parents got me as a birthday present. I guess they made stuff sturdier back then.”

“I guess so,” I replied.

“You guys want something to drink?” Evan called to us from the kitchen, his voice carrying through the mostly open space of the home. Most of the furniture had been brought in, though it hadn’t been arranged. And the small stuff was still in stacked boxes here and there.

“I’ll take a beer!” I shouted back at him.

“Make that two!” said Clarissa.

“Three!” Dream trotted down the stairs, a big smile on her face. She looked smoking hot dressed in her tight yoga pants– good enough that I wanted to be the one to give her the first orgasm in her new room.

“Got it!” shouted Evan.

A grunt sounded out behind me. I turned to see Jay coming in, the girls’ huge, new TV in his hands. It was still in the box, making for an awkward carry. I hurried over to help him.

“I got it,” he said, flashing me a hard look, one that made it clear he didn’t want any help at all.

“You sure?”

“I’m sure.”

“Fine.”

Clarissa was busy moving furniture into place, but when I glanced over my shoulder, I saw Evan standing at the entrance to the living room, beers in his hands and an expression of concern on his face. We met eyes, and there was no doubt that we were thinking the same thing, that Jay had been prickly all day, more than usual. And out of the corner of my eye I could see that Dream seemed to be thinking the same.

Something was wrong.

Jay carried the TV over the far wall and set it down, Clarissa hurrying over to help guide him.

“Perfect!” she said, giving Jay a pat on the back when he was done. “Now you just need to set it up and plug it in!” Clarissa grinned, letting him know she was only joking.

But Jay’s expression stayed stony. Not like he’d ever been the kind of guy to break out into wild laughter for the sake of being friendly, but even he could crack a smile every now and then. Clarissa, realizing she wasn’t going to get any kind of reaction, scrunched her face and turned away.

Clarissa caught my attention as Jay slouched out of the house back to the truck.

What’s wrong with him?she mouthed the words.

I shrugged, making a “your guess is as good as mine” face.

“Anyway,” Evan said, coming around to pass out the beers. “Only a few more things and then we are done.”

Clarissa, beer in hand, let out a squeal of happiness. Then she rushed over to Evan and threw her arms around him, pulling my brother into a tight hug. When she was done with him, she came over to me and did the same.

“You guys have been amazing,” she said. “You know, if you ever decide to retire from the military, you could easily open a moving company. Call it ‘Three Hot Brothers Moving’ or something like that.”
