Duncan greeted me with a nod. “Yo. You look pretty tense for someone at a Christmas party.”

“Yeah, what’s up?” asked Jay.

“I don’t know – might be being stupid. But I haven’t seen Dream anywhere. Either of you guys know where she is?”

They shook their heads.

“I’d been downstairs for the last half-hour or so,” said Jay. “Didn’t see her there.”

“And I’ve been jumping from conversation to conversation,” added Duncan. “Feel like I would’ve seen her at some point.”

I felt a little vindicated. “Right, so you guys don’t think I’m being out of line here? Just seems strange that she’d go AWOL at her own party.”

“Let’s check downstairs,” said Jay. “And I’ll hit the bathroom on the second floor to see if she’s in there.”

“Good plan,” said Duncan. “Let’s move.”

Together we headed down to the patio, Duncan making his way to the crowds now gathered around the bonfire while me and Jay headed inside. Dream was tiny, sure, and not the easiest person to spot in a crowd, but it wasn’t like the place was so huge that it was unreasonable to think we could find her right away.

“Can you believehe showed up?” The voice of a woman nearby caught my attention. I turned to see two college-age women speaking with one another, looks of disgust on their faces.

“I know. And he looked really wasted and out of it too. The guy’s a freaking mess.”

“Yeah. I mean Adam should’ve gotten the hint that if he wasn’t invited that meant Dream didn’t want him here. But he crashed the party anyway.”

“Hey,” I said, joining the conversation. “Sorry to interrupt. But are you two talking about Adam Myles?”

The woman to my right, a tall blonde nodded.

“That’s the one. He just rolled in here with a little bottle of vodka in his hand trying to talk to Dream. He was getting super annoying about it, and she finally just went off somewhere with him to get him to calm down.”

“What?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Yep,” said the other girl, a cute redhead with a pixie cut. “Something’s wrong with that dude.”

“Do you two have any idea where they went?”

“No, sorry,” said the blonde. “It was really cringe and embarrassing to watch so I didn’t want to stare, you know?”

“Thanks.”

I stepped away from the girls and ran my hand through my hair.

Adam was there. And he was alone with Dream.

There was no doubt in my mind that only bad would come from this. I had to find her, and fast.
