We don’t make it in time.

Renee shoves it open, gun pointed straight between my eyes.

Mei-Lee slams a heavy metal shovel onto Renee’s arm with a painful crack. The madwoman lets out a violent howl, cradling her arm that’s now bent the wrong way. Taylor shoves her hard, slamming Renee head-first into Hunter’s parked Ferrari.

“Let’s go, let’s go!” I shout.

Mei-Lee slams her fist on the garage door’s button, but the system doesn’t react. She tries again and again, but it doesn’t open. We’re trapped inside with the psycho trying to kill us, one who’s quickly regaining consciousness and looking downright pissed.

The power’s out!Mei-Lee signs frantically.

“This way!” I yell, turning back to lead my friends inside.

We need to get the hell out of here and call 911, but with Renee rampaging after us, there’s no time to stop and make a phone call.

“We need to split up!” I wheeze. My stomach hurts. I haven’t been hit, but this disturbance can’t be good for the baby.

“Hell, no,” Taylor snaps. “She’s clearly after you.”

“Exactly. I’ll distract her. You and Mei-Lee need to get out of here and find help.”

“I’m not leaving you behind with that crazy bitch.”

Another gunshot; the bullet embeds itself into the drywall. I dare to glance at Renee over my shoulder as we run. The woman is certifiably insane. Her eyes are bloodshot, her nose is cracked and bloody, and I’m pretty sure she’s missing a tooth thanks to Taylor’s skillful body checking.

“You’re all fucking dead!” she screams like a banshee.

Mei-Lee snatches up a nearby lamp and throws it at Renee, hitting her in the head. We run upstairs before she can recover. It proves to be a difficult task given all the weight I’m carrying, but I resist the urge to panic. I fight through the burn in my muscles and the tightness in my chest. I will do whatever I have to in order to protect my child.

Another shot.

Mei-Lee lets out a gargled scream. She stumbles back, falls. Red blooms across her chest, soaking into her shirt.

“No!” I cry, but Taylor keeps pushing me upstairs.

“Run, Eden! Just run!”

I feel like I’m dying. I want my body to move faster, but my brain’s paralyzed with fear. I want to vomit. I want to cry. But I force myself to keep going. Renee is picking us off one by one and I don’t think anyone’s coming to help. My only hope is to hide away and get to a phone.

Taylor and I make it to the top floor. Renee is still pursuing us, but she’s taking her sweet time. In fact, I’m pretty sure she’s skipping after us, giggling like a fucking maniac. Taylor and I run into one of the many unused guest rooms, frantically searching for a place to hide.

“Hide in there,” Taylor quickly whispers to me, pushing me toward the tall mahogany wardrobe.

I shake my head. “There’s only enough room for one person.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll hide under the bed. Now,move.”

I climb in and Taylor closes the door firmly but quietly behind me. I’m in the dark, only able to rely on my hearing, though it’s next to impossible over my harsh breathing and rapid heartbeats. I try to slow my breathing, taking long, steady breaths in an attempt to calm and quiet myself.

Footsteps. The opening of a door. Renee is going from room to room, humming to herself like this is a fucking game.

“Come out, come out wherever you are,” she sings.

The door to our room opens, creaking on its hinges. The click of her heels against the floorboards announces her presence. She’s here.

I hold my breath, one hand protectively over my belly. Am I going to die here? Is she really going to kill me? Tremors wrack my body as fear sinks into my very bones. I’m not scared for me, but for baby Lucas.

“I know you’re in here,” Renee teases. “Come out, Eden. I just want to talk.”
