A frown grows and I can’t stop the growl that slips out.

“Why are you doing that?” Candy smirks, but the dark shadows under her eyes show how tired she is.

“I was just thinking. She’s so beautiful that she’s probably going to have boys buzzing around her like bees around the honeypot.”

Candy snorts with laughter. “I think we’ve got a few years to go before we have to worry about that.”

“I’m planning ahead.”

“How about you just enjoy what we’ve got now? Let the future take care of itself.”

I nod my head and lean down to touch my lips to her cheek, savoring the soft skin under my lips. The scent that drifts to my nose. Like sweet candy and spicy fruit. A scent that is as familiar to me as breathing. One that calms me and centers my life.

My life is now my wife and my daughter. I will fight like hell to take care of them for the rest of my life. I’ll make sure that they know that I will protect them with the last breath in my body. Because my soul belongs to the two of them. Always will.

“What should we call her?” Candy asks me.

“Fate. Because she’s what I’ve wanted my whole life. You and her. But together we made Fate. Our future.”

Her wide blue eyes open, tears filling them. “Fate. Yes, she is our fate. The beginning of all of our dreams. Family, friends, a good home. Fate.”

I kiss her lightly and snuggle the sleepy bundle in my arms, smiling. I’ve got my two girls. My two loves. And for right now, that’s all I need. If we have more children, terrific.

They will be fate as well. But our little Fate is the beginning of all of it. And I can’t wait to see what fate has in store for us in the years to come.
