“Right back at ya. Gosh, if I knew phone sex could be like that, I would have tried it a whole lot sooner.” I can hear the smile in her tone.

“I’m not biting, Holly. I like being your first at things. How about next time we step it up to video?” My cock hardens again at the thought.

“Mmm, maybe I’ll hold out until I get to have you in person. You know, give you some incentive to hurry up and come home.”

“I have plenty of incentive to come home. You are all the incentive I need.” Fuck, I’ve never missed anyone as much as I fucking miss this woman. I miss everything about her. Her smell, her touch, her voice, her laughter. I miss seeing her mass of red hair spilled out on the pillows as she sleeps. “I fucking miss you so damn much, dolcezza. I love you.”

“I love you too. I didn’t think it was possible to miss someone this much. But it’s easier knowing that you’re coming back. When I thought you were…” She stops mid-sentence.

“I know. I’m sorry for doing that to you. I will never do that to you again. But you have to promise me something.”

“What?”

“If anything were to happen… I don’t want you to suffer. Promise me you’ll find a way to move on and be happy again, that you’ll never hurt yourself no matter how much it hurts in the moment.” I can’t stop seeing her on the floor with that piece of glass in her hands… envisioning the thoughts that were going through her head. If Neo hadn’t gotten into that room, would she have done it? Would she have sliced into her wrist?

“I can’t promise that. I want to, but I don’t want a life that doesn’t include you, Theo. Just hurry up and come back to me.”

Fuck! She fucking hung up. I really wanted that promise.

ChapterTwelve

Ithrow the phone across the bed. Fuck him! Who does he think he is, trying to get me to make such a stupid promise? My phone starts ringing immediately. I ignore it, and the ringing stops only to be followed by the beeps of an incoming text. Again, I ignore it, get up, and look for clothes. I dig through my suitcase for something comfortable. I find a pair of denim cutoffs and a black tank top. Those will work. Then I throw on a pair of Converse; I’m going to need sensible footwear for all the walking I plan to do today.

The phone has continued to beep on the bed as I get dressed. I pick up and read through the messages, all from Theo. No surprise there, considering he’s the only one who knows the number. He’s probably never had a girl hang up on him before.

Yours: Holly, did you seriously hang up on me?

Yours: Answer your phone, Holly…

Yours: Holly, call me.

Yours: Those are way too fucking short. You are not wearing that out of the room.

The last one has me pausing. I look around. Of course that fucker has cameras hooked up in here. I text him back.

Me: Have the cameras removed from the room, Theo, or I’m going to stay at my parents’ house.

I dig out my actual phone from my bag and send a group text to the girls: Reilly, Alyssa, and our other friend, Sarah.

Me: We’re going shopping today. I have multiple unlimited cards to burn through!

Their replies filter in almost instantly.

Reilly: YES! Pick me up. I’m so ready for this. Also, when are you telling the girls about your husband?

Sarah: Husband? WTF! What did I miss, Holly? Also, I can’t. I’m working today. Sorry!

Alyssa: Holly, details, I need them now! Count me in! I need to escape my overbearing hubby for a few hours anyway.

I smile. I knew I could count on these girls. This is so out of my element. I’ve never been much of a shopper. My sister is a different story, and she has great taste. It’s time Holly 2.0 got a new look. I send them back a message, while the burner phone is constantly ringing in my other hand.

Me: I’ll fill you in when I see you both. Rye, be there in thirty. Then I’ll come get you, Lyssa.

I tuck my phone into my bag, look up, and smile. I don’t know where the cameras are hidden, but I know he’s watching me. I slam the door and only make it five steps down the hallway before Neo is in front of me, holding his phone out. “Your husband is insisting on talking to you,” he says.

“Tell my husband that I’m currentlyotherwise occupied. I’m heading out.” I go to slip past him, but he stops me.

“Hold up. Where are you going? And it sure as hell isn’t anywhere by yourself. Let me get the keys.” Neo presses the mute button on his phone and stares me directly in the eyes. “Look, I don’t know what the idiot did to piss you off, but you need to speak with him, Holly. He’s over in Italy. Do you really want to carry the burden of regret… if something were to go wrong?”
