I mean, why would you tape a gun there if it wasn’t loaded? Then I remember we have a kid in this house. How many more weapons are hidden around here? What if Izzy was to find one and hurt herself? Dismissing that thought for now, I point the gun at the two soldiers. To their credit, they don’t even flinch.

“What the fuck is goin’ on here?” Donatello’s gravelly voice fills the silence.

“These incompetent idiots let my sister and Angelica get abducted and wouldn’t stop to help me find them,” I tell him.

“What? Who the fuck took them? The fucking Clover… I’m going to fucking skin that Irish fuck alive.” Donatello puts his phone to his ear, doling out orders in rapid Italian, when Bray walks in.

“Hol, where’s Reilly. What happened?”

“She… she… Someone took her, Bray. We have to find her.”

“What do you mean someone took her?” His voice is cold. Calm.

“I came out of the café, and they were gone. The food was on the ground, and they were gone. I just went to the bathroom.”

“Hol, where’s the garage? I’m gonna need some keys.”

“Where are you going?”

“I’m gonna go get my fucking wife and slit the throats of any fucker with balls enough to touch her,” he says quietly.

“How? We don’t even know where she is, Bray.”

He shows me his phone with a flashing light on a map. “Her ring may have a tracker in it… If you tell her, I’ll deny it.”

“I’m coming. Let’s go.”

“No, you’re staying put. Trust me, Hol, I’ll get her back. But I’m not taking you with me.”

“I have the cars ready,” Donatello adds. “Holly, I need you to stay with Izzy, please. I promise I’ll take care of this.”

I don’t know what to do. I want to argue. I want to go with them and find my sister. And I want Theo. He’d know what to do. “Oh my God. They have T too, don’t they?” All the soldiers, now standing around as if appearing from the woodwork, exchange a look but none of them answer me. These assholes have my husband and my sister. “Donatello, make them bleed. A lot,” I tell him, before heading upstairs to find Izzy.

“Don’t worry, I plan to.”

I’m in a daze. I don’t know what to do. As much as I want to go after them, I know I’ll be a distraction. I’d just be in the way. But staying here, I feel useless. Helpless. What if they don’t get there soon enough? What if they made Reilly remove her jewelry, and that tracker isn’t leading them anywhere?

There are so many questions running through my head. I fall to the ground in the hallway. Bringing my knees to my chest, I bury my head in my thighs and let the tears fall. I don’t care who sees me crying right now.

“Aunt Holly. It’s going to be okay.” Izzy’s little hands reach out and stroke my hair. I look up into her innocent eyes.

“I’m sorry, Izzy. I’m okay. I think it’s just the baby. Pregnancy makes you hormonal, you know.” I try to tuck everything away.

“It’s not that. I heard what Nonno was saying on the phone. Someone took my mama. And your sister. Uncle T and Neo are missing too. But it’s going to be okay. Nonno will fix it. He always does,” she says, and she’s so bloody convincing. This little girl has seen way too much in her short life. She should be playing with dolls, toys, computer games. Instead, she’s comforting me, knowing full well her mother has just been abducted.

“I’m sorry. I should have listened to your Uncle T and stayed in the house.”

“Maybe. But my mama knows how to fight. No one will beat her. She’s been teaching me too. She says girls need to know how to protect themselves in our world. We can’t rely on boys to always save us.”

“Well, your mama is a really smart woman.”

“We should watch a movie. It will help pass the time. That’s what I usually do when I’m waiting for things.”

“That sounds like a great idea. Let’s go and raid the snacks. Then we can camp out in the movie room.”

“Is there a movie room in your new house, Aunt Holly?”

“There sure is.”
