Josh

Emmy’s been holed up in the bedroom with Ella for two hours. What the fuck could they possibly be doing that takes two hours? I’ve attempted to go in a few times, only to be screamed at by Ella telling me to get out.

I’ve tried to distract myself, going through emails and boring-ass reports for work, but every few minutes, I’m pulled back to the image of Emmy sitting up in the bed, screaming at the top of her lungs with tears running down her face.

I’m such a fucking idiot for not controlling my reactions better. I should have been able to keep my cool. I’m surprised she’s not running for the hills with how I acted, unless she’s too scared to try. Fuck, is she only here because she’s too scared of what I’ll do if she tries to leave? I did tell her I’m not about to let her go.

And I’m fucking not, but I also would not hurt her either. I’ll do anything to keep her. I’ll also do anything to make her nightmares disappear. Dragging my fingers through my hair, I can’t help but think how much I’d fucking love a drink right now. But I’m refraining. I need to be as clear-minded as I can be. I need to figure the fuck out who did this to Emmy, who the fuck is continuing to haunt her.

“You look like shit,” Dean says as he walks in with two large coffee cups.

“Thank you, I do try hard,” I remark.

“Here, drink this. Are you sure you’re going to be okay?” he pries.

“I’m fine. I just need to find the fucker who did this to her.”

“I get that, I do. But I worry about you. With her, it’s different. Your obsession with her has already been a little much. But now that she’s back, it’s off the fucking charts—hospital territory,” Dean says.

“Yeah, how’s that differ from your obsession with Ella?” I ask him.

“If Ella wanted to walk out that door without me, I’d probably let her. Can you say the same?”

“Fuck no. But I also don’t care. I let her go once, and look what happened to her.”

“Josh, whatever happened to her is not on you. It’s on the fucker who did it. Not you.”

“I always thought if I kept her around, I’d end up like him. Like dad. That’s why I sent her away. Guess the joke’s on me because the life I thought I was saving her from, she ended up having anyway.”

“You are not like him. Never have been. Do you think I’d leave you alone with Ella, even for a minute, if you were? Fuck that. He does not define who you are.”

Dean gets worked up whenever the topic of our asshole father comes up. I don’t actually know why, but he hates him more than I do. And from what I remember, Dean hardly had anything to do with him at all in the later years. No, that shit was all left up to me.

“I know that now, but when I was eighteen, I obviously wasn’t as smart.” I sip at the coffee; it’s burnt and fucking disgusting, but I drink it anyway. “How much longer do you think they’re going to be?” I ask, looking at my watch.

“Your guess is as good as mine.” Just as he sits across from me, I hear the sound of Ella and Emmy laughing as they come down the hall.

I’m too impatient to wait for her. I get up and meet her just as she’s about to enter the living room. The moment my eyes land on her, I’m speechless. Fuck me, Emmy is always beautiful. But right now, fuck, she’s fucking gorgeous.

My eyes travel up and down her body numerous times. I wouldn’t be surprised if I was drooling right now. I have an instant fucking boner.

Emmy stands still, wringing her hands in front of her. “If you don’t like it, I can change,” she says.

If I don’t like it? Is she blind? The only reason that dress is coming off her is because I’m ripping it off to worship the body underneath it.

“Emmy, do you like the dress?” I ask her.

“I like it.” She smiles at me.

“So, keep it on then. You look fucking gorgeous, babe,” I tell her as I pull her close to me. I don’t think I can ever get enough of her being in my arms. “Are you ready to head back?”

“More than ready,” she says.

“Oh, Dean, I’m heading up to the farm with Emily and Josh for a few days,” Ella adds in. That’s news to me.

“Why?” Dean and I both ask at the same time.

“Because your mum invited me. She said something about wedding planning.”
