“Babe, relax.” Whispering in her ear, I tell her, “We make over a million dollars in one day. We can afford to lose a couple.” Her eyes widen.

“You make that, Josh. Not me. I’m homeless. I don’t even have a job. I didn’t even get to finish university. I’m probably never going to get a job.”

“You know you’re never going to need a job, Em, but if you want to do something, I’ll do whatever I can to make sure you can do it.”

“I don’t think I can go back to school now. It’s been too many years.”

“You can do whatever you want.”

“We’ll see.”

“Emmy, people go to Uni at all ages. If you want to go back to med school, I can make sure you get into the best school in Australia.”

“How’d you know I was in med school?”

I look over to Sam. “He found your records. Not that I was surprised. You’re the smartest person I know.”

“No, I’m not. But I do need to pee. I’ll be back.” She goes to get off my lap.

“I’ll come with you.”

“You are not coming to the bathroom with me, Joshua. Sit down.” She folds her arms over her chest.

“Fine, Ella, go with Emily.” Ella doesn’t argue; she stands up and links arms with my girl. I nod to the security guy sitting at the bar watching, instructing him to follow.

“You know she’s not going to disappear into thin air, right?” Bray laughs.

“Fuck off.”

“Just saying. You also don’t have x-ray vision, so no matter how much you stare at the wall, you won’t be able to see her.”

He’s fucking right. I can’t see her anymore and it makes my skin crawl. I don’t like it. I feel like something’s wrong. Like I should have gone with her.

I try to shake the feeling and down the glass of whisky Dean puts in front of me.

“Josh, you good?” Sam asks.

“Yeah, fine.”

“No, you’re not.”

“You’re right. I’m not.” I get up and head in the direction Emily went. Something in my gut is telling me I need to find her. I always fucking trust my gut.
