“I don’t need the memories as long as I have you, Josh.”

This girl is fucking everything. I know heads are rolling up in heaven at the fuck up someone made by pairing her with me. I smile because, in this case, the devil really has won.

“Okay, you are going to be at the courthouse, right? You’re not going to stand me up, are you?” Emily asks me as I’m about to leave.

“Emmy, I’d never fucking stand you up. I can’t wait for you to be Mrs. McKinley. I’ll meet you there at 6:00 p.m. Sharp. Don’t be late,” I tell her, kissing her already kiss-swollen lips.

“I don’t understand why we can’t go together. We’ve already done every other unspeakable thing together, Josh. It’s not exactly going to be bad luck.”

“I just have an errand I need to run first. Besides, it’s a memory you can share with the grandkids—how you got ready with Ella and met me at the courthouse. You’ll tell them how your breath was taken away by how stunning I looked in a tux. That your heart pitter-pattered the moment you got to put that ring on my finger and locked my ass down forever.” I give her my best panty-melting smirk, hoping to ease some of her worries just a little.

“I’ll tell them all of that and so much more. I love you, Josh. And, in case I forget to tell you later, thank you for choosing me.”

“I will always choose you, Emmy.”

As I’m walking out of the house, a sense of unease settles in me. It’s not prewedding jitters. I have no doubt that Emily is my one. I’ve never doubted that. But something else is off. I just don’t know what it is.

I read the address that Sam sent me earlier. He said he had a couple of guys scoping the place out, but they hadn’t found anything yet. If there’s even a scrap of information that will lead me to this fucker, then I want it found, which means I’m going to go there and search for myself.

I have three hours before I have to meet Emily. I figure I can check this place out, change in the car and then head to the courthouse.

Pulling up to the deserted house, I’m pretty sure I’m not going to find jack shit here. The place looks like it’s been empty for decades. An old fibro cottage, surrounded by overgrown grass and weeds. I double-check that I’ve got the right address. Looking around the street, I don’t see another goddamn car. I thought Sam said he had a few guys staking out the place.

I’ll be in and out. I’m going to be fucking pissed if I walk into a goddamn spider web in this mess. Slamming the car door, I stomp towards the front of the house. The door is already slightly ajar. Pushing it open further, I look down the empty entranceway.

The floorboards creak as I walk through the back of the house. Just as I suspected, there is nothing here. Not a sign of life, or of anyone having ever been here. Deciding I’m wasting my time, I turn and head back for the entrance.

I’m halfway down the hall when I hear the footsteps behind me. Turning around, I see him, Jones, right before a sharp pain radiates through my head and my vision blurs. Dizzy and disorientated, I grab onto the wall to hold myself, then there’s another sharp jolt to my head and my knees hit the floor.
