“I’ve waited a long time for you, Emily. You shouldn’t have made me wait. Trent promised you’d be mine. Now you are.” Then I see the detective lick his lips as his eyes roam over my chest. It makes me sick.

“You and I both know Trent was a lying piece of shit,” I reply to him. It’s not until after the words leave my mouth that I realise what I’ve said. The hand that comes out and slaps me across my face knocks me to the ground.

I can hear Joshua cursing, yelling all sorts of profanity. I need to end this now. With a clear mind and determination, I reach for the pistol in my waistband.

The detective says something about words not hurting him to Josh. He’s so focused on Joshua he doesn’t notice that I’m now standing and holding a gun aimed at his head.

“Words might not, but this sure as fuck will,” I say. I take the slightest bit of pleasure as I watch the shock cross his face.

I don’t give him a chance to say anything. I’m not prepared to take the risk of him overpowering me. With my dad’s voice in my ear, I focus on the target, breathe, pull my finger back and become one with the pistol.

The sound of the gunshot echoes in the room. The detective’s body falls to the ground. I aim the end of the barrel at his fallen form, checking where I actually got him. It’s a clean shot, straight in the middle of the forehead. Lowering my weapon, I stare at him, waiting to feel… something. Anything. Where’s the guilt? The shame? I should feel something other than pure relief right now.

“Emmy, untie me.” Josh’s hoarse voice breaks me from my inner turmoil.

“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry.” Dropping the gun to the ground, I pull out the knife from my boot and cut him loose.
